Ferreira can be Yorkshire’s Ferrari

Rising South African star Donovan Ferreira has signed on for this summer’s Vitality Blast – and when it comes to batting, he can certainly put his foot down.

Ferreira, 25, can do it all. He bats with power in the middle order, keeps wicket and bowls handy off-spin when needed.

Having only played a couple of T20 internationals for South Africa to date, he is by no means a household name in world cricket. But he very well soon could be.

Hailing from Pretoria, he has made 51 T20 appearances since debuting in 2018, most recently for the Joburg Super Kings in the SAT20.

He will also be in the Rajasthan Royals’ squad for the 2024 Indian Premier League, playing alongside England limited overs captain Jos Buttler and ex-Viking Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

Ferreira’s half-century of T20 matches have yielded a quartet of fifties, including a best of 82 not out.

In the SAT20 just gone, he crashed a blistering 56 off 20 balls with seven fours and three sixes, batting at number six in a win over Pretoria Capitals.

On his international debut, at home against Australia last September, he hit a notable 48 off 21 balls.

The smart money would be on this imposing batting powerhouse playing a greater role with the wicketkeeping gloves than the ball for the Vikings. But that’s far from certain.

The great thing is that the county’s latest overseas signing provides Shan Masood and Ottis Gibson with a multitude of options as they target Yorkshire’s maiden Blast title this summer.
