When Steven Patterson was appointed Yorkshire’s captain in the early part of the 2018 season he became only the third player from East Yorkshire and only the fourth pace bowler to hold the post. Needless to say, he was the first to appear in both categories so that makes him unique amongst the county’s 36 official skippers. Paul Dyson looks other similar captains who have preceded him.

Born in Beverley, Steven Patterson is a member of that rare breed of cricketer to come from the eastern part of the county. Of the 182 who have received a county cap only seven were born in the area and only four of those had significant careers.
