Vitality Blast, North Group
Monday June 6, 2022, 6.30pm
Headingley

Toss: Nottinghamshire won it and elected to bowl.

Teams: Yorkshire – Lyth, Allen, Willey c, Brook, Fraine, Tattersall w, Thompson, Drakes, Revis, Rashid, Shutt.

Nottinghamshire – Hales, Clarke, Duckett, Patel, Moores w, Christian c, Mullaney, Harrison, Ball, Fletcher, Carter.

Match summary: Yorkshire claimed an impressive victory over Nottinghamshire, their first against this opponent in five years, to strengthen their Finals Day hopes.

The Vikings made a commanding 202-5, backing up the 208 they chased to beat Durham here on Friday, to set up a third win in six North Group fixtures.

Jonny Tattersall top-scored with an eye-catching 48 not out off 30 balls, while Harry Brook made 40 off 25.

Then, inside 11 balls of the Notts’ chase, it was all but game over as they slipped to 14-3. David Willey bowled Alex Hales for a golden duck, as did superb Dominic Drakes with Samit Patel. The latter was the second of two wickets in two balls for the Bajan left-arm quick.

But Notts fought back. Steven Mullaney clattered a career best 79 off 46 balls, sharing 114 inside 11 overs for the sixth wicket with Dan Christian (56). And with four overs left, they were 145-5, needing 58.

But Jordan Thompson and Drakes (3-31) struck again to leave Matthew Revis defending 35 off the last over. Notts finished on 179-7 to lose by 23 runs, giving Yorkshire the perfect tonic heading into Wednesday’s Roses clash.

Report: Coming into this game, Yorkshire had not beaten Notts in the Blast since an early 2017 success at Headingley. Since then, Notts had won six games on the trot at either venue punctuated by two rainy No Results.

But there was little chance of the Outlaws extending this fixture against a Vikings side minus Dom Bess, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Dawid Malan due to injury. Kohler-Cadmore has suffered a minor setback with his concussion, but he is already back in training.

Openers Finn Allen (16) and Adam Lyth (20) played breezy cameos, but there were two key periods in Yorkshire’s innings on a fast and true pitch.

The first came in the four overs after the powerplay, which Yorkshire finished on 54-2.

With Harry Brook and David Willey in partnership, they added 63 runs in the next four overs, taking the score to 117-2 after 10. In all, the pair shared 76 for the third wicket, with captain Willey making 34 off 19.

But Willey and Brook fell in successive overs – caught at long-off against the leg-spin of Calvin Harrison and bowled by Samit Patel’s slow left-arm – to leave the score at 123-4 in the 12th over.

Then came the Jonny Tattersall intervention, his highest T20 score in four years. He and Will Fraine (19) initially consolidated before 59 crucially came from the last five overs.

Tattersall hoisted sixes over square-leg and long-on and deserved a fifty. It didn’t come. But the win did.

That was virtually sealed inside 11 balls of the Outlaws’ reply, as the 2020 champions slipped to 14-3 and were staring down the barrel of a third defeat in six North Group games.

It has been a slow start from a side who have won the North Group twice in the last three years and are always there and thereabouts.

Alex Hales played down the wrong line to a Willey in-swinger and fell for a golden duck after only two balls of the chase.

Bajan Drakes then forced Joe Clarke to glove an attempted pull in the next over and was caught behind down leg one-handed for five as Tattersall’s memorable night continued. Next ball, Samit Patel inside-edged one onto leg stump.

Mullaney and Christian later united with the score on 50-5 at the start of the eighth over following further wickets for Matthew Revis and Adil Rashid.

And it felt like it was going to be nothing more than a consolatory effort. It was. But only just.

They cleared the boundary three times apiece, Mullaney’s all to leg, and reached fifties in 31 balls apiece.

But Jordan Thompson had Mullaney caught at deep cover and Drakes bowled Christian as the score fell to 166-7 in the 19th. That really was game over.

Turning point: Having chased down 208 to beat Durham here on Friday, Yorkshire would have been well aware that their 202-5 was by no means unassailable. But Notts were given a mountain to climb when dangerous former England opener Alex Hales was bowled by David Willey for a golden duck two balls into the chase, leaving the score at 1-1.

Magic moment: Dominic Drakes struck twice in as many deliveries in the second over to reduce Notts to 14-3. The wiry West Indian left-arm arm quick had Joe Clarke caught behind down leg by Tattersall and bowled Samit Patel for a golden duck.

Stat of the match: This was Yorkshire’s 24th score of 200 or more in T20 cricket, since its inception in 2003. Seventeen of those have come at Headingley.

What they said – Yorkshire’s Jonny Tattersall said: “They’re a good team, a great one to play against, and they were in it all the way until the end.

“But we played good cricket and held our nerve.

“We just had to stick in, and we did that. Hopefully we can keep that momentum going after two wins on the bounce.

“It wasn’t the easiest of wickets to come in on, which showed through their innings.

“But they’re such a good team who can come back from any situation. They have batting all the way down. Mullaney was outstanding and Christian top drawer.

“Myself and Frainey tried to rotate for a bit and get the odd boundary. I thought we were in a decent position if we could score at 12 an over in the last four overs, which we pretty much did.

“The lads were saying 180 or 190 (was par). Then our bowlers were outstanding in their powerplay.

“It was nice to get some runs and catch down the leg-side. I really enjoyed my night tonight.

“We’ve had a bit of a stuttering start with the Leicester loss and the Derbyshire game, which was eight overs and not a great game to play in. But we’ve played good cricket in the last two matches.

“We had another epic match at their place (Lancashire). We always seem to have good ones against Lancashire. But we know that if we play the cricket we’re capable of, we can definitely take them on and win the match.”

What’s next: It’s the Roses match here on Wednesday (6.30pm). Lancashire are currently the North Group leaders. The two sides played out a thrilling tie at Emirates Old Trafford last month.
