Headingley

Toss: Yorkshire won it and elected to bowl

Teams: Yorkshire – Lyth, Malan, Willey c, Kohler-Cadmore w, Fraine, Tattersall, Thompson, Drakes, Revis, Bess, Rashid.

Lancashire – Jennings, Salt w, Livingstone, Croft, Vilas c, David, Wells, Wood, Lamb, Hartley, Gleeson.

Match summary: These two teams never fail to deliver, but Yorkshire tasted disappointment, losing by four runs in a high-scoring thriller as they attempted to chase down 214.

At 184-4 after 16.2 overs, the game was ours. But Lancashire, top of the North Group, bowled superbly at the death to drag this game out of the fire, with Danny Lamb defending 17 off the last over against Matthew Revis and Dominic Drakes.

That became five off the last ball with Drakes on strike, and he carved out to deep backward point, where Tom Hartley took a catch inches inside the rope. But the drama was not over. The umpires called for a review, and the 11,300 crowd waited in anticipation.

There was every chance the Lancashire spinner had trodden on the rope. Alas, no, and Yorkshire finished on 209-8.

After Lancashire posted 213-5, Tom Kohler-Cadmore batted brilliantly for 77 off 43 balls, while David Willey added 52 off 28. Unfortunately, the Vikings lost for the third time in seven games, while the Lightning won for the sixth time in seven to maintain their unbeaten start.

Report: This was a truly remarkable game of T20 cricket.

Singapore international Tim David crashed 66 off 32 balls, including six sixes, to push the Lightning beyond 200 having stuttered to 100-4 in the 12th over.

Jordan Thompson’s second ball forced Steven Croft (41) to steer to short third before Liam Livingstone – for only two – miscued England team-mate Rashid high to midwicket. Thompson then had Keaton Jennings caught at third for 42.

Earlier, Jennings and Croft shared 72 in seven overs to advance from 20-1 in the third.

But their partnership was usurped by powerhouse David and Dane Vilas, who shared 96 inside nine overs for the fifth wicket, with the latter – Lancashire’s skipper adding 41 not out.

Their partnership included nine sixes and took 43 off Thompson’s last two overs as he recorded two for 52. David hit three of his six sixes off Thompson in the 18th over – which went for 24 – as the score moved to 183-4.

Yorkshire were missing Finn Allen (Covid) and Harry Brook, who had been called up to England duty earlier than expected. But Dawid Malan and Kohler-Cadmore came in.

This was only Kohler-Cadmore’s fourth game of the season following the concussion he suffered in Pakistan in January. But he played like an absolute dream, strong on anything short either side of the wicket.

Malan fell for a golden duck three balls into the chase before Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth shared 119 in only 9.1 overs.

A ramped six over third off Gleeson was a highlight in a 25-ball fifty for Kohler-Cadmore, while Lyth made 39.

When Lyth holed out to square-leg off Danny Lamb’s seamers, Yorkshire were 124-2 in the 10th over. And when Kohler-Cadmore slog-swept left-arm spinner Tom Hartley to deep midwicket, Yorkshire were 152-3 in the 13th.

It still felt like job done with only 62 more needed. But a twist of gigantic proportion was around the corner.

Despite Willey reaching his fifty off 27 balls, Wood and Hartley strikes were supplemented by two for Gleeson in the 18th over as the score moved to 193-7 after 17.3 overs.

He had Willey superbly caught and bowled one-handed before yorking Thompson to finish with 2-37. Luke Wood then conceded only four off the penultimate over as Matthew Revis and Dominic Drakes struggled to settle.

That left Lamb with breathing space in the last. But it was quickly evaporated, including a Revis six over mid-wicket. A wide was also thrown in before, with Drakes needing five off the last ball, the left-hander carved away to deep backward point where Hartley clung on to dampen spirits.

Turning point:  There were two turning points.

The first was the fifth-wicket partnership of 96 inside nine overs between Tim David and Dane Vilas.

It was a hammer blow to Yorkshire, who had preceded it with three wickets in 14 balls to leave the score at 100-4 in the 12th over. When Dominic Drakes removed David towards the end of the 19th over, the score was 196-5.

The second was the closing stages of the Vikings innings. After 16.2 overs, they were 184-4 and in cruise control. But three wickets fell in eight balls, including two in the 18th over for quick Richard Gleeson as the score became 193-7. From there, it was also going to be tough.

Magic moment: Take the result out of it, the way Tom Kohler-Cadmore played was sensational. You might want to hide behind the sofa if you keep the re-run of this game going right to the end, but it’s certainly worth watching the way TKC batted in the early stages of the chase. Phenomenal!

Stat of the match: In the last six T20 innings at Headingley, across three games since last Friday – Durham and Nottinghamshire included, there have been five totals recorded above 200.

What they said – Yorkshire’s Ottis Gibson said: “That’s the nature of T20. You look at the first innings, we bowled 16 overs brilliantly. But the last four overs changed the game. Then, when we batted, the exact same thing. We were bossing the game for 16 overs and then lost a couple of wickets in the last four.

“New batters going in, it’s always going to be very difficult.

“They executed their plans better than we did at the back end, and that’s the difference.

“The first game at Old Trafford we could have got home. This game we could have got home.

“They were two very good teams competing at a very high level.”

What’s next: Yorkshire’s eighth Blast game, and their last before a week’s break for the return of Championship cricket, comes against Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston on Friday night (6.30pm).
