Match Summary: Yorkshire’s Vitality Blast quarter-final hopes are over.
The White Rose county suffered a heavy home defeat to Derbyshire Falcons, who completed a second successive Sunday win against them. This time, they chased 152 to win by eight wickets inside 17 overs.
Seamer Ben Aitchison claimed a fine 5-29 from four overs and Afghanistan off-spinner Mohammad Ghazanfar was excellent with 2-5 from four overs in Yorkshire’s 151-9, to which Dom Bess contributed a battling career best 53 off 37 balls.
Falcons opener Aneurin Donald then crashed 54 off 30 balls to set up a successful chase, which was completed by Wayne Madsen, who reached 51 not out off 28 balls with a winning six.
Yorkshire lost their eighth game in 12 this season.

Match Report: Yorkshire endured a nightmare start to their penultimate Blast home game of the season as they reached the end of the powerplay at 28-4, dealing with the loss of two men who performed so well against Lancashire on Friday, Jonny Bairstow and Will Luxton.
Bairstow was bowled for a five-ball duck playing back to the off-spin of Afghanistani Mohammad Ghazanfar, who also had James Wharton caught at short cover.
In between, Luxton was caught at short third-man and captain Dawid Malan at short fine-leg off Ben Aitchison’s seam.
In victory at Emirates Old Trafford, Bairstow and Luxton contributed 206 between them. Here, they could only manage four.
Unfortunately, the wickets continued to fall.
Pakistani overseas batter Abdullah Shafique was next to go for 26, caught at mid-on off a miscued pull at Zak Chappell as Yorkshire reached the 10-over mark at 55-5.
Bess then hit two leg-side sixes off Pat Brown’s seam – one pulled, the other slog swept – to keep Yorkshire in the hunt.
His second career Blast fifty came off 36 balls.

But he fell to his next delivery, caught at deep mid-wicket off Aitchison, who struck three times in four balls in the 19th over.
Either side of dismissing Bess, he had Jordan Thompson caught behind and Jafer Chohan caught backward point in recording only Derbyshire’s second ever T20 five-for.
Aneurin Donald was Yorkshire’s destroyer in chief at Chesterfield last week, crashing 85 off 30 balls.
Here, he faced the same number of deliveries. And while he only contributed 54, it was just as valuable.
He ramped Will Sutherland for six and was strong on the sweep against spin in reaching his fifty off 24 balls. By the time a sixth fifty of the campaign was achieved, Derbyshire were flying at 70-0 in the sixth over.
Donald miscued to point off Dan Moriarty’s left-arm spin having shared 78 inside eight overs with Australian Caleb Jewell.
Moriarty did strike again when Harry Came pulled to deep mid-wicket.
“But Jewell went on to share an unbroken third-wicket stand of 73 with Wayne Madsen, who finished 51 not out off 28 balls and reached his fifty with the winning blow – a six over long-on off Jafer Chohan.

Jewell finished 41 not out off 34 balls and played the anchoring role.
Stat of the Match: Derbyshire off-spinner Mohammad Ghazanfar’s 2-5 from four overs is the joint second most economical four-over spell in the history of the Vitality Blast.
His captain Samit Patel, back in his Nottinghamshire days, took 3-4 against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge in 2021. That remains the record in this competition.
Turning Point: Yorkshire failed to recover sufficiently enough from losing Jonny Bairstow, Will Luxton and Dawid Malan in the first 19 balls of the match, slipping to 10-3. James Wharton also followed later in the powerplay.
Magic Moment: Unfortunately, these were few and far between today. But Dom Bess recorded a career best 53 off 37 balls and was excellent as he swam against the tide.
What They Said – Yorkshire all-rounder Dom Bess: “We weren’t on it, it wasn’t good enough. It probably sums up our T20 block. We played like we did at Old Trafford on Friday, and we’ve come here and been poor.
“Their young opening bowler (Ghazanfar) was just quality. I haven’t seen something like that, 2-5 in four overs, for a long time. You’d be happy with that in a four-day game, let alone a T20. Credit to him.
“We felt if we could get it to 160 or 170, we’d have a chance. But the last couple of weeks, Nye (Donald) has played proper cricket. He showed us up at Chesterfield and has done his trick there – got them off to a flyer.

“Once you’ve got it below seven-an-over, it’s pretty easy to just knock it around and get the odd boundary.
“I’ll hold my hands up. I dropped an absolute sitter at mid-off. If I’d have taken that – first wicket in the first over – it sets the tone. But, again, that’s the reality of where we are.”
What’s Next: Yorkshire’s penultimate group game sees them face Lancashire Lightning at Headingley on Thursday evening (6.30pm). Yorkshire are aiming to complete the Roses double after victory at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday.
