Roooot
England are 409-4 in their first-innings reply to India’s 358 all out at Emirates Old Trafford.
Joe Root is 105 not out and is now third on the all-time run-scorer’s list in Test cricket behind only Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar. If he gets to 120, he will pass Ponting. A remarkable batter, a Yorkshire legend.
Meanwhile, here at Scarborough, Yorkshire are 38-1. Adam Lyth has 26 of them.
Yorkshire 15-1, 6.2 overs
Fin Bean caught Jamie Overton bowled Sai Kishore, 1.

Yorkshire have rectified their over-rate
News from the scorers is that Yorkshire are now plus one, so there are no issues as things stand.

Surrey 436-6, 105.5 overs
Jordan Clark caught Will Luxton bowled Dom Bess, 39.
Slog-swept to deep mid-wicket.
Yorkshire have a second bowling point, but they are currently -3 on the over-rate. They have to speed up, which you’d think they will do once the 110 overs are up and bonus points are no longer in play.
Blake 50
Josh Blake goes to his maiden first-class fifty, off 89 balls with 9x4s.
Surrey are now 420-5 in the 102nd.
Surrey head for 450
Surrey are cruising towards a fifth batting bonus point for reaching 450. They are 414-5 after 101 overs.
Josh Blake has 48 and Jordan Clark 32.
Dom Bess is into the attack as Yorkshire search for both a sixth wicket and an increased over-rate. They are behind in the latter sense and need to avoid a deduction.
Just bonus points now
That’s the only thing to aim for now in this game, with Surrey having just avoided the follow-on by reaching 373-5 after 94 overs.
Yorkshire have 16 overs in which to take four more wickets for another two bonus points. One wicket will get them one.
Yorkshire will end this game between 6-8 points behind third-bottom Durham with four rounds remaining, including them to play at Headingley in late September.
Essex beat Sussex
Essex have beaten Sussex at Hove. With that, Yorkshire will drop back into the bottom two this evening. However, Durham are now firmly in the fight at the bottom having lost to Somerset earlier in the week.
Surrey, meanwhile, are 362-5 in the 92nd over, with Josh Blake on 20 and Jordan Clark 8.
Surrey 346-5, 85.3 overs
Ryan Patel caught Dom Bess bowled Jack White, 92.
Patel caught low down at mid-off.
Matthew Revis remains the contest’s only centurion.
Surrey will avoid the follow-on should they reach 368.
Jonny Bairstow’s partner Megan, meanwhile, has gone into labour.
Bess captaining
Dom Bess is skippering the side today in Jonny Bairstow’s absence.
Ryan Patel will face up to Jack White. Surrey’s left-hander has 86. Josh Blake is with him on 10.
Duke to keep wicket
Harry Duke will take the gloves today, with Jonny Bairstow absent.
Good morning...
From North Marine Road, where it’s dry and bright.
Surrey will begin the day on 338-4 in reply to Yorkshire’s first-innings 517-6 declared.
Ryan Patel will resume unbeaten on 86 not out.
For this game to have any life, Yorkshire realistically need to take six wickets for 29 runs to make Surrey follow-on. But with the pitch not offering too much assistance and not having the pace of usual, it’s difficult to see how that can happen.
Yesterday was a superb day of cricket, with runs galore – 400 plus.
Matthew Revis was Yorkshire’s star with 110 not out, his second successive Championship century.
He spoke at close yesterday, a piece which you can read alongside our match report from day two via the embedded X posts above.
Enjoy the day.
