Live: Rothesay County Championship – Yorkshire Men v Worcestershire, Day 2

Live coverage as Yorkshire Men host Worcestershire in the Rothesay County Championship at Headingley, our first home match of 2025.

Close: Yorkshire 61-1, 19 overs, leading by 355

That was as dominant a day as they come.

Yorkshire are firmly in course for the win, and while the likes of Jordan Thompson and Ben Coad stood out, they were expertly backed up by a host of others.

Adam Lyth and Dom Bess will begin tomorrow on 32 and 10 respectively.

The sun has disappeared

The floodlights are on late in the day here at Headingley, where Yorkshire are 51-1 in their second innings, leading by 345. Adam Lyth has 27 and Dom Bess 6.

Yorkshire 45-1, 12.3 overs

Fin Bean bowled Ben Allison, 14.

Yorkshire’s opener has played on to seamer Allison, and we have a little more than six overs remaining in the day.

Dom Bess in as night-watchman, joining Lyth, who 27.

Yorkshire start second innings solidly

Yorkshire are really turning the screw here.

They have reached 26-0 in the seventh over of their second innings, leading by 320.

Adam Lyth 16 and Fin Bean 8.

We have a total of 19 overs to bowl in the remainder day, so just over 12 to come.

George Hill

Worcestershire 162 all out, 66.3 overs

Jacob Duffy caught behind by Jonny Bairstow bowled Ben Coad, 1.

Worcestershire have conceded a lead of 294. Coad finishes with 4-39 and Thompson 3-27, White 2-46 and Hill 1-24.

Super performance, and we have 19 overs left in the day.

Yorkshire will bat again.

Worcestershire 153-9, 63.3 overs

Ethan Brookes caught Dawid Malan bowled Jordan Thompson, 19.

Brookes miscues to mid-on, and Worcestershire are on the verge here. Thompson has three-for.

Will Yorkshire enforce the follow-on?

Ben Coad

Ben Coad celebrates an afternoon wicket at Headingley today.

Calm start to the evening

Worcestershire have advanced to 163-8 in the 62nd over thanks to 19 for Ethan Brookes and 13 for Adam Finch. They have shared 17 so far.

Early stages of the evening and Yorkshire aiming to wrap first innings up

Worcestershire are 141-8 in reply to 456.

Ethan Brookes has 17 and Adam Finch 1. Jack White and George Hill in operation for Yorkshire.

Tea: Worcestershire 136-8, 55.2 overs

Ben Allison is caught at first slip by Dom Bess off George Hill, 0.

Yorkshire strike eight times in a rampant afternoon. Sensational.

Worcestershire 133-7, 52.4 overs

Brett D’Oliveira bowled Jack White, 10.

White has a second wicket – and off-stump is out of the ground.

Super session for Yorkshire – seven wickets since lunch.

Worcestershire 113-6, 42.4 overs

Tom Taylor is caught behind by Jonny Bairstow off Ben Coad, 0.

Inside-edge behind and Yorkshire have taken six wickets for 23 runs.

Brett D’Oliveira is in now for Worcestershire. Coad has three wickets, Thompson two.

Worcestershire 111-5, 38.3 overs

Matthew Waite, for 1, has been caught by George Hill off Ben Coad.

A juggling Hill does the trick at first slip, though ended up taking the catch closer to third slip in truth once he’d done.

What a passage of play this is. Tom Taylor in now.

Worcestershire 106-4, 37.2 overs

Jordan Thompson

Now then….

Jordan Thompson has claimed his second wicket, with Adam Hose falling to a superb low catch diving to his right at third slip by Fin Bean.

That’s three wickets in 14 balls, and Brett D’Oliveira hasn’t come in at his usual number six. Matthew Waite is at the crease now.

Worcestershire 101-3, 36.3 overs

Jake Libby caught Adam Lyth bowled Ben Coad, 53.

Now then. Yorkshire have a real opening after opener Libby edges Coad to second slip.

Wickets for White, Thompson and Coad.

Adam Hose has come to the crease to join Ethan Brookes, with Brett D’Oliveira due in next. It will be interesting to see how fit he is after that dislocated thumb this morning.

For now, though, both new batters on nought. Excellent passage of play for Yorkshire.

Worcestershire 101-2, 35.1 overs

Kashif Ali has been bowled by Jordan Thompson, 3.

Thompson strikes with his first ball back into the attack, and it’s the first wicket in the match to fall bowled.

Ali has tried to leave Thompson alone and has his off-stump rocked back via an inside-edge.

Jake Libby has 53 and remains at the crease.

That 105-3 I mentioned a short while ago is certainly on now.

Libby leads Pears

Opener Jake Libby has reached a 94-ball half-century with seven fours included.

He has taken his side to 98-1 in the 33rd over.

Worcestershire 90-1, 30.2 overs

Jack White

Gareth Roderick caught Adam Lyth bowled Jack White, 37.

Caught at second slip, and Yorkshire are up and running. Two more quick wickets – 105-3, say – and this has a completely different look about it.

Similar flow to opening two days

Yesterday, Yorkshire went at around four an over for the first 10 overs before Worcestershire’s bowlers slowed things down.

Well, today has gone a similar way. The visitors were 39-0 after 10 and are now 89-0 in the 30th. Jake Libby has 44 of those, Gareth Roderick 37.

Jack White and George Hill are currently in operation for Yorkshire.

Hill searching for breakthrough

George Hill has taken the ball immediately after lunch having bowled three overs at a cost of two runs before the break.

Worcestershire are 70-0 and going nicely from their point of view.

Injury update from Worcestershire camp

Worcestershire captain Brett D’Oliveira suffered a dislocated thumb this morning, but it was popped back in after he left the field and he should be fit to bat if and when required later today.

Lunch: Worcestershire 70-0 from 21 overs

No success for Yorkshire with the ball just yet.

Gareth Roderick and Jake Libby have 22 apiece.

Final stages of an even morning

Both sides have enjoyed success with the bat this morning.

Worcestershire are 68-0 in reply to our 456.

Gareth Roderick and Jake Libby have 31 apiece. Dom Bess has just bowled his first over.

Rob Jones

Coad switches ends

Jonny Bairstow has juggled his seamers a touch so far as he tries to break through.

Ben Coad started at the Kirkstall Lane End and his bowling under the shadow of the Howard Stand.

Worcestershire have started strongly, reaching 43-0 in the 12th over.

Worcestershire have started steadily with the bat

The visitors are 36-0 in the ninth over, bowled by Jordan Thompson, who has replaced Ben Coad from the Kirkstall Lane End.

Jake Libby 17 and Gareth Roderick 13.

Worcestershire replying to 456

The Pears are at the crease.

Gareth Roderick and Jake Libby are opening, with Ben Coad and Jack White taking the new ball.

Worcestershire are 15-0 in the third over.

Yorkshire 456 all out, 101.2 overs

Jordan Thompson caught Rob Jones (sub) bowled Ben Allison, 70.

Yorkshire’s innings is brought to a close by a superb juggling catch on the boundary rope at deep backward square-leg.

Jones was on the field in place of Brett D’Oliveira, who has suffered what could well be a dislocated wrist whilst trying to take a catch.

Thompson’s brilliant 58-ball innings, including four sixes, ends.

Terrific Tommo takes us beyond 450

Jordan Thompson

Jordan Thompson, you little beauty.

Thompson has reached his fifty off 48 balls and raced beyond it as well.

Yorkshire are 451-9 in the 100th over, securing a fifth batting point.

Thompson did it in style too. He helped Tom Taylor for six over the leg-side and then reverse scooped him over the keeper’s head for another later in the 99th over.

Yorkshire 435-9, 97.2 overs

Ben Coad caught behind by Gareth Roderick bowled Ben Allison, 31.

Yorkshire are 15 runs away from a fifth batting point, and Jack White will try to help Jordan Thompson (49) get there.

White has just been given a really warm reception by the Headingley crowd after PA announcer Howard Ferguson introduced him as a home debutant.

Coad has started in dreamy fashion

Ben Coad drove Tom Taylor through the covers for four twice in the opening over and has 31 out of 436-8. Jordan Thompson 49.

Up and running

Right, we’re underway on day two.

Yorkshire 425-8 in the 97th over, bowled by Tom Taylor.

Jordan Thompson has 48 and Ben Coad 22.

Yorkshire to build on excellent opening day?

Jonny Bairstow

Good morning from Headingley, where the sun is shining once more ahead of day two.

Jonny Bairstow will have been delighted with Yorkshire’s work yesterday, the hosts finishing on 425-8. If they can put the cherry on top of the cake this morning and get a fifth batting point for reaching 450, it will set the day up beautifully.

Dawid Malan’s excellent 98 was the feature knock for the White Rose, but so many others helped out.

Jordan Thompson with 48 not out and Ben Coad 22 unbeaten were a couple of those, and they will return to the crease this morning.

Worcestershire bowled nicely in fits and starts, but they will be frustrated at their lack of consistency.

There was definitely a bit of help on offer for the bowlers, not just pace and carry. Hopefully that continues today and Yorkshire make better use of it.
