Live: Rothesay County Championship – Yorkshire Men v Worcestershire, Day 1

Live coverage as Yorkshire Men host Worcestershire in the Rothesay County Championship at Headingley, our first home match of 2025.

Close: Yorkshire 425-8, 96 overs

Many contributors to that day, including Dawid Malan’s fine 98.

Adam Lyth 67, George Hill 63 and James Wharton 44. But when all’s said and done, you wonder just how important Jordan Thompson’s 48 not out off 41 balls will be.

That innings has really rubber-stamped Yorkshire’s dominance. He and Ben Coad (22) have shared an unbroken 65 for the ninth wicket. Four batting points secured, five in sight.

Buccaneering Tommo

Jordan Thompson has clobbered four fours and a six in 30 off 26 balls.

Yorkshire are 388-8 in the 91st over. Coad has 5.

Yorkshire 360-8, 86.5 overs

Dom Bess lbw Jacob Duffy, 7.

Duffy was errant early on, but he’s come back well with the new ball. He has three wickets, and we’re in the 87th over.

Ben Coad in alongside Jordan Thompson, who has 8.

Yorkshire 345-7, 82.2 overs

Dawid Malan caught Ethan Brookes bowled Jacob Duffy, 98.

A fine innings comes to an end as he edges the second ball with the new ball to second slip.

Jordan Thompson is in alongside Dom Bess, 1.

Yorkshire 339-6, 79.1 overs

Will Luxton caught Kashif Ali bowled Jake Libby, 25.

Worcestershire’s part-time off-spinner Jake Libby has ousted Luxton caught at deep mid-wicket on the slog sweep.

Dom Bess in now alongside Dawid Malan, who has 95. New ball due in a few minutes.

Malan on 93....

Dawid Malan is closing in on a century. He’s seven away at 328-5 in the 78th over, with Luxton 16.

Hang on a moment, make that 334-5 and Luxton on 22. He’s just lofted Jake Libby’s off-spin over long-off down towards the Howard Stand.

Yorkshire 302-5, 70.4 overs

George Hill caught behind by Gareth Roderick off Ben Allison for 63.

A super knock is ended, and Hill’s swish of the bat in frustration tells its tale. He looked so good.

Will Luxton in now alongside Malan, who has 83.

We’re in the 71st over of 96 today.

Hill giving Worcestershire a mountain to climb

George has reached his fifty off 71 balls with 10 fours. An excellent knock.

Yorkshire are 286-4 in the 68th over. Dawid Malan has 76.

Malan and Hill closing in.....

Dawid Malan has 76 and George Hill 44. They have shared 97 for the fifth wicket to reassert Yorkshire’s dominance following an early-afternoon wobble.

Yorkshire are 276-4 in the 67th over.

Tea: Yorkshire 270-4, 64 overs

Worcestershire had their moments in that afternoon session, but Yorkshire are in a good position.

Dawid Malan 75 and George Hill 39. These two have shared an unbroken 91 for the fifth wicket.

Batting point number one in the bag

Yorkshire 250-4 in the 61st over. Dawid Malan 61 and George Hill 35. They’ve shared 71 and counting.

Fifty for Malan

Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan has reached his fifty off 66 balls, with eight fours.

Yorkshire are now 230-4 from 57 overs. George Hill has looked in super touch fir 26.

Yorkshire 179-4, 47.3 overs

Jonny Bairstow caught behind by Gareth Roderick bowled Adam Finch, 7.

Oh no! Bairstow has been adjudged to have gloved a short ball behind off the seam of Finch.

The Yorkshire skipper was amazed when the umpire, Mark Newell, gave it.

George Hill joins Dawid Malan, who has 29.

Jimmy Anderson to be knighted

Is this the place to congratulate a Lancastrian?

Is it heckers like, I hear you cry.

But come on, he does deserve it.

It has just been announced that England legend Jimmy Anderson has been knighted in Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list.

Yorkshire 162-3, 42.3 overs

Adam Lyth caught Kashif Ali bowled Matthew Waite, 67.

Oh no. Lyth miscues an expansive pull shot out to deep square-leg off the seam of former Yorkshire team-mate Waite.

Jonny Bairstow strides to the crease to a warm ovation from the Headingley faithful. Dawid Malan has 23.

A milestone looms....

Adam Lyth

Still a way to go, but if Adam Lyth reaches 144 – he currently has 63 – he will have totalled 15,000 first-class career runs.

Yorkshire 145-2 in the 40th over, with Dawid Malan on 12.

We have a crowd of 2,037 in at Headingley today.

Yorkshire 123-2, 35 overs

James Wharton is caught behind by Gareth Roderick off Jacob Duffy’s bowling for 44.

Good bit of bowling from the Kiwi, who got some extra bounce and a bit of away movement.

Dawid Malan in now to join Adam Lyth, who has 53.

Elsewhere around the country

There are a couple of interesting scores in Division One. Nottinghamshire are 78-5 against Essex at Trent Bridge, while Surrey are 125-4 against Hampshire at the Kia Oval.

As I type, James Wharton has just guided a boundary to third-man off Jacob Duffy’s seam. He has 36 out of 113-1.

Up and running after lunch

Early stages of the afternoon, and Yorkshire have moved to 105-1 in the 32nd over.

Adam Lyth 50 and James Wharton 29. These two have just posted their fifty stand.

Lunch: Yorkshire 103-1, 30 overs.

Yorkshire have enjoyed a fine morning, led by Adam Lyth, whose start to the summer has been mightily impressive.

He has 50 to his name and James Wharton 27. They have shared an unbroken 48.

The only wicket to fall was that of Fin Bean, 19, to Tom Taylor’s seam.

Half-century for Lythy

Adam Lyth reaches another fifty, this one coming off 85 balls with 9x4s. Excellent knock.

Yorkshire are 102-1 in the 30th over, the last of the morning. James Wharton has 26, and the partnership is 47.

Yorkshire going nicely

Yorkshire have moved to 93-1 in the 27th over. Adam Lyth 47, James Wharton 21.

After erring early on, Worcestershire’s bowlers have tightened up – Matthew Waite is bowling at present – but the hosts will be delighted with how things have gone this morning. They have a built a solid platform. Now they must capitalise.

Lyth and Bean

Adam Lyth and Fin Bean got Yorkshire off to a fine start this morning.

Four fours in the over!

James Wharton has started his innings like a house on fire. He has moved to 19 off 11 balls, including taking four fours in the over off Tom Taylor just now. Yorkshire are 85-1 after 19 overs, including Adam Lyth’s 41.

Yorkshire 55-1, 14.5 overs

Fin Bean caught Ben Allison bowled Tom Taylor, 19.

Bean edges seamer Taylor to third slip, stymying a really positive start. James Wharton in now alongside Lyth, who has 30.

50 up....

Adam Lyth and Fin Bean have helped Yorkshire reach 50-0 in the 12th over. Lyth 29 and Bean 15.

SIX!!!

Fin Bean

Fin Bean has just pulled Jacob Duffy over deep backward square-leg, into the East Stand, for six. He has 15 out of 45-0 in the ninth over.

Lyth quick out of the blocks

Adam Lyth has moved 20 off 19 balls and has started very nicely indeed. He clipped Jacob Duffy through mid-wicket for four and has just driven Tom Taylor through the covers. Yorkshire are 28-0 in the sixth over.

There’s a definite green tinge to the pitch and plenty of pace and carry. You wonder whether Worcestershire have been enticed by the colour of the pitch. Looks a batting day. Fingers crossed, it proves so.

Two early boundaries

Adam Lyth hit the first two balls of the match for four, both to third-man of New Zealand overseas seamer Duffy. Yorkshire 9-0 after one over.

Up and running

Jacob Duffy has the new ball for Worcestershire and is bowling to Adam Lyth. Fin Bean is Lyth’s opening partner.

Lyth starts with a boundary to third-man.

Yorkshire make one change - batting first

Jordan Thompson

Worcestershire have won the toss and will bowl first here at Headingley. Richard Robinson has left some grass on the pitch.

Jordan Thompson has come in for injured Ben Cliff as the only change from last week’s defeat against Hampshire.

Yorkshire’s team: Lyth, Bean, Wharton, Malan, Bairstow c&w, Luxton, Hill, Bess, Thompson, Coad, White.

Anthony McGrath

Anthony McGrath leads Yorkshire for the first time as coach at Headingley in a competitive fixture today.
