Ben Coad said

“I got a call from Galey when I was at breakfast saying, ‘Be ready to skipper’.
“It’s just a great honour to be a captain of this club. I’m very happy.
“I’ve done it few times this season in the second team and had a full year of it before I came into the firsts. I’ve had a bit of experience, but never at this level.
“I’d say they’re a little bit over par at the minute.
“I think we were a little too inconsistent – not full enough – throughout. But we’ll come back tomorrow and get it right.”

5.53pm – Close Notts close the opening day on 292-9 from 96 overs, including Coad’s 3-71 on his captaincy debut and Clarke’s 109.

5.50pm WICKET Revis gets Fletcher caught at cover for second. 292-9 in the 95th, the day’s penultimate over.

5.39pm WICKET Hutton gone! Revis gets him caught behind, 9. It’s 282-8 in the 93rd. Sixth catch for Duke. Maiden first-class wicket for Revis.

5.20pm WICKET Clarke caught at second slip by Lyth off Coad for 109. Notts are 270-7 in the 89th over.

5.18pm Evison reaches his maiden fifty off 97 balls. Notts 266-6 after 88 overs.

5.03pm Notts 256-6 in the 85th over. Clarke has 103 and Evison 42. These two have shared 82.

4.50pm Clarke reaches a 194-ball century with a pulled six off Coad. 236-6 in the 81st over. Well played.

4.47pm Yorkshire have taken the new ball. Notts are 230-6 after 80. Coad back on and searching for his third wicket. Clarke 94 and Evison 27.

Elsewhere, Lancashire are 2-0 in reply to Hampshire’s 143 all out at Liverpool. Warwickshire are 206-3 v Somerset at Edgbaston.

4.31pm Oh no. Second chance off Clarke’s blade goes begging. He’s on 88 and is dropped by Lyth at slip off Bess. Notts 213-6 in the 76th.

4.20pm Notts have got their first batting point at 200-6 after 72 overs. Clarke 80, Evison 11. Bess and Brook are in operation For Yorkshire.

3.57pm Elsewhere in Division One, Warwickshire are 169-3 against Somerset at Edgbaston and Hampshire 130-8 v Lancashire at Liverpool.

Just a reminder, for Yorkshire to finish second and qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final next week, we have to win here, there has to be a positive result at Liverpool and Somerset need to win at Edgbaston.

3.54pm Through one over of the evening session, bowled by Thompson. Notts are 181-6 after 65. Fisher sharing early evening bowling duties. Clarke’s 68 represents a season’s best score, while Evison has 4.

Tea Report Captain Ben Coad claimed two of the three afternoon wickets to fall on day one at Trent Bridge as Nottinghamshire reached tea on 176-6 from 64 overs.

On the opening day of the summer’s final LV= Insurance County Championship fixture, Notts have advanced from 79-3 in 29 at lunch.

Coad struck either side of a Jordan Thompson wicket, with Joe Clarke leading the hosts’ bid to keep their title hopes alive with an unbeaten 65 off 143 balls.

He reached a 96-ball fifty during the afternoon, his eighth of the Championship campaign. His highest score of 2021 in red ball cricket is 67.

Coad had his opposite skipper Steven Mullaney caught behind for 31 by one which moved away off the seam, leaving Notts at 119-4 after 37.

Thompson then had Tom Moores the same way as the left-hander felt for one outside off-stump in the 49th – 147-5.

Clarke was dropped on 59 by Adam Lyth at second slip off Coad, with Notts 162-5 in the 55th over. But the stand-in skipper was rewarded for his endeavour when Liam Patterson-White edged him behind on 16, Notts falling to 173-6 in the 61st.

While Notts can still win the title, Yorkshire can qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final next week by finishing second in the Division One table.

Both need to win this game and hope for other results to go their way.

Joey Evison will begin the evening session at the crease, alongside Clarke, on two.

3.30pm Tea. Another three wickets in the session, two of them to Coad. Notts reach 176-6 from 64 overs. Clarke 65 and Evison 2.

*3.18pm** WICKET Patterson-White has been caught behind off Coad for 16. Notts are 173-6 in the 61st over. Second wicket for Coad.

2.56pm Oh no. Lyth drops Clarke (59) at second slip off Coad. Notts 162-5 after 55.

2.51pm Bess has been brought into the attack at the Pavilion End. 157-5 at the start of the 54th over. Clarke 58 and Patterson-White 6.

2.32pm Yorkshire have had seven captains in competitive cricket in 2021. A couple of correct answers on our Twitter feed.

Gary Ballance, Dom Bess, Ben Coad, Adam Lyth, Joe Root, Steve Patterson and David Willey have all led the team at stages.

2.28pm WICKET Thompson gets Moores caught behind, 9. Feeling for one outside off stump. Notts are 147-5 in the 49th.

2.22pm Clarke reaches a 96-ball fifty with nine fours. He has moved the hosts to 142-4 in the 47th over. His latest boundary was clipped to long-leg off Thompson.

2.13pm Notts are 134-4 in the 45th over. Clarke has 46 and Moores 4.

Quiz question. Yorkshire have had seven different captains in competitive cricket this season. Can you name them? Answer posted in 15 mins.

1.43pm WICKET Mullaney caught behind for 31 off Coad. The skipper gets his opposite number and Notts are 119-4 after 37 overs.

As that wicket fell, was just looking up Coad’s captaincy record. He has skippered Yorkshire’s second XI on 10 occasions since 2016, including four of those this season. In 2012, he also captained the Academy once.

1.39pm Notts are 114-3 in the 37th over, bowled by Coad.

Elsewhere, leaders Hampshire are 79-6 against Lancashire at Liverpool and Warwickshire are 104-1 against Somerset at Edgbaston.

1.30pm Mullaney has just taken three boundaries off Hill’s ninth over, moving his side to 110-3 in the 35th. He has 25 and Clarke 33.

Hill has been the pick of the Yorkshire bowlers so far, with 2-32 from nine, that over clearly denting his figures somewhat.

1.11pm Up and running after lunch. Hill to Mullaney. Notts are 79-3 in the 30th over.

Lunch Report George Hill has taken two of the three Nottinghamshire wickets to fall during an even opening morning of the season-ending LV= Insurance County Championship fixture at Trent Bridge.

Notts can still win the Championship title, while Yorkshire can qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s next week by finishing second in Division One.

Ben Coad has been handed the honour of captaining Yorkshire for the first time in the absence of injured Steve Patterson (hamstring), and he elected to bowl upon winning the toss.

Notts have since reached lunch on 79-3 from 29 overs.

The hosts had made their way to 45-0 inside 15 overs through Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater, who made 23 and 18 respectively.

Hameed was first to go when Matthew Fisher had him caught behind playing a late cut – 45-1. Fisher had swapped ends from the Pavilion to Radcliffe Road and was in the first over of his second spell.

Hill then struck in the next over with his fourth ball, Slater also caught behind pushing forwards (47-2).

And when Ben Duckett sliced a drive at Hill’s seamers in the 24th over, Notts were 70-3.

Yorkshire have made three changes to the side which lost against Warwickshire at Emerald Headingley last week.

Gary Ballance (illness), Dawid Malan (rested) and Patterson are all missing, while Will Fraine, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Matthew Revis are all playing.

To qualify for the Bob Willis final, Yorkshire must win here, hope Warwickshire lose to Somerset and there is a positive result between Lancashire and Hampshire at Liverpool.

12.31pm Lunch. Notts have reached 79-3 after 29 overs, including two wickets for Hill and one for Fisher. Clarke 18 and Mullaney 9.

12.12pm WICKET Hill again. This time Duckett slices a drive to Bess at backward point, where a head high catch is taken. 70-3.

12.06pm Yorkshire pair Joe Root and Harry Brook have both been shortlisted for respective awards by the PCA for 2021. Root is up for the men’s Player of the Year award alongside David Bedingham, Luke Fletcher and Simon Harmer, while Brook is up for the their Young Player of the Year award alongside Sam Cook and Tom Haines.

Northern Diamonds all-rounder Nat Sciver has been shortlisted for the women’s Player of the Year award alongside Sophia Dunkley, Danielle Gibson and Eve Jones.

12.01pm Elsewhere in Division One, Hampshire are 47-3 v Lancashire at Liverpool and Warwickshire 49-1 v Somerset at Edgbaston.

Here, Notts have moved to 64-2 after 21 overs. Clarke 17, Duckett 2.

11.41am WICKET Hill’s fourth ball, having replaced Thompson, does the trick. Duke with another catch behind, Slater pushing forwards. 18. 47-2 in the 16th.

11.32am WICKET Hameed is caught behind cutting at Fisher, who has just returned to bowl at the Radcliffe Road end in place of Coad. The England opener falls for 23 having tried to late cut the ball. 45-1 in the 15th.

11.10am Notts will be pretty chuffed with their start, 31-0. They have had to combat some swing and seam and a few stifled shouts for caught behind and lbw. Hameed 17 and Slater 10. The locals suggest the pitch will play better than it looks (very green).

10.38am Notts are 7-0 after two overs. Seam and swing evident in the early stages, with a couple of stifled shouts for lbw and caught behind from Coad and Fisher against Hameed and Slater.

10.08am Team news….

Nottinghamshire: Slater, Hameed, Duckett, Clarke, Mullaney c, Moores w, Patterson-White, Evison, Hutton, Fletcher, Paterson.

Yorkshire: Lyth, Hill, Kohler-Cadmore, Fraine, Brook, Thompson, Revis, Bess, Duke w, Fisher, Coad c.

10.03am Yorkshire’s new stand-in captain Ben Coad has won his first toss and elected to bowl on what is an incredibly green pitch.

Good morning.

It is a lovely morning in Nottingham ahead of the opening day of our final Championship fixture of the season, against Notts.

The sun is shining ahead of a 10.30am start.

Yorkshire sit fifth in Division One and can still finish second to qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s next week.

The four teams above them, Hampshire, Warwickshire, Lancashire and Notts – in that order – can all win the Championship this week.

Hampshire travel to third-placed Lancashire at Liverpool and Warwickshire host sixth-placed Somerset at Edgbaston.

For Yorkshire to qualify for the Bob Willis, three things must realistically happen. Yorkshire must win this game, there needs to be a winner at Liverpool and Somerset have to beat Warwickshire.

Safe to say, there will be plenty of drama this week. There always is when it comes to the final week of the season.

There will be a stream available as usual, the link for which we will post here.

Enjoy the day.
