“We’re very disappointed. We came down here on the back of a fantastic win at Scarborough, one of the best we’ve had in a number of years.
“So we had a bit of confidence.
“We knew it would be hard work against a good side on a pitch that would probably offer a result somehow. Unfortunately, the way we batted over the two innings, I don’t think we gave ourselves a chance to put ourselves ahead of the game.
“As we have done for a number of games, we were always coming from behind and trying to claw it back. And Essex are a good side. They took us out of the game.

Hampshire v Warwickshire (Day 4, Ageas Bowl)
A fourth five-wicket haul of the season for Hampshire’s Kyle Abbott put Hampshire in a strong position as Warwickshire slumped to 103 for 6 chasing 404 but since then Sam Hain and Ben Mike have both made unbeaten half-centuries to take Warwicks to 180 for 6 on the final day.
Surrey v Kent (Kia Oval)
Kent’s last six wickets went for 86 this morning but they still had a useful first-innings lead of 98. Surrey are 59 for 1 in their second innings, 29 runs behind.
Somerset v Nottinghamshire (Taunton)
Debutant Liam Patterson-White and Ravi Ashwin have both taken five wickets each to help dismiss Somerset for 169 in their second innings. Azhar Ali made 65 not out for the leaders. Notts have been set 255 to win.
Essex v Yorkshire (Chelmsford)
Second-placed Essex are closing in on victory. Yorkshire are 208 for 9, leading by 88. Peter Siddle has taken four wickets and Simon Harmer three while Keshav Maharaj made 85 for Yorkshire.
DIVISION TWO
Leicestershire v Durham (Leicester)
Durham have extended their lead to 276 with five second-innings wickets remaining. Earlier, opener Alex Lees made 93 and night-watchman Nathan Rimmington 92.
Middlesex v Gloucestershire (Merchant Taylors’ School)
After taking a career-best seven wickets, Toby Roland-Jones has made an unbeaten half-century for Middlesex to help take his side 237 for 9, having been 124 for 7. Tom Helm made 46 and Middlesex lead by 208. Ryan Higgins has taken four wickets against his former county.
Northamptonshire v Lancashire (Northampton)
Ben Sanderson took 4 for 62 as Lancashire were dismissed for 315, despite Steven Croft’s 78. With a first-innings lead of 127 Northants are 53 for 3 in their second innings, an overall lead of 180.
Worcestershire v Derbyshire (Kidderminster)
Tom Lace and Tony Palladino added 99 for Derbyshire’s ninth wicket before they were dismissed for 377, which left Worcestershire five sessions to score 372 to win. Wicketkeeper Ben Cox lodged the 300th dismissal of his career while Lace was unbeaten on 132. Worcestershire have begun their chase badly and are 34 for 3.
Tea Keshav Maharaj smashed a superb 85 off 71 balls, including five sixes, as Yorkshire set Essex 92 to win just before tea on day three at Chelmsford. The hosts have reached the break at 34-1 from 10 overs.
The South African overseas spinner counter-attacked in swashbuckling fashion, starting his innings just before lunch and enjoying most of his success afterwards.
He hit four of his sixes off Simon Harmer’s off-spinners in reaching a 46-ball fifty.
Maharaj had been dropped on 43 on the deep mid-wicket boundary by Peter Siddle, who claimed four wickets.
The left-arm spinner, who bats right-handed, shared 64 inside 10 overs for the ninth wicket with Ben Coad to advance from 129-8.
But both men fell as Essex claimed three wickets in the afternoon to wrap up Yorkshire’s innings.
Steve Patterson and Coad were caught at first slip by Sir Alastair Cook off Jamie Porter, while sandwiched in between Maharaj was bowled by Siddle.
Unfortunately, Tom Kohler-Cadmore was unable to hold on to a chance at first slip, diving low to his right, with Cook on nought off Patterson at the start of Essex’s chase.
The same combination accounted for Cook when he reached six, leaving the hosts at 22-1.
Nick Browne and Tom Westley are unbeaten on 13 and 11. Coad has not taken the field for Essex’s chase.

3.05pm Yorkshire are all out for 211, meaning Essex need 92 to win. Coad has been caught at first slip by Cook off Porter for 18.
2.40pm A fabulous 85 from Maharaj comes to an end as he’s bowled by Siddle, losing his off stump. Yorkshire are 193-9 with a lead of 73.
2.29pm Excellent from Maharaj and Coad, who have shared 52 to move the score to 181-8 with a lead of 61. Yorkshire will really need to double this to make it a tricky target for Essex.
2.07pm SIX! Maharaj smashes Harmer straight and then is dropped at deep mid-wicket next ball by Siddle on 43. Shortly afterwards, he reaches 50 off 46 balls with another six over straight mid-wicket. 146-8 now.
2.01pm Patterson gone! He’s edged Porter to Cook at first slip for four, and Yorkshire are 129-8 with a lead of nine.
1.48pm Yorkshire are 120-7 in the early stages of the afternoon. That leaves them level.
Lunch Yorkshire remain under severe pressure against Essex at Chelmsford at lunch on day three, where they have reached at 116-7 in their second innings trailing by four runs.
Steve Patterson’s side started the day on 38-3 trailing by 82 and lost four wickets in the morning.
Adam Lyth, Harry Brook, Jonny Tattersall and Matthew Fisher all fell, two of them to the prolific off-spin of Simon Harmer, who has eight wickets in the match.
Lyth and Brook were trapped lbw by seamers Jamie Porter and Peter Siddle before Tattersall was caught at leg slip off Harmer, who then had Fisher lbw having switched to bowl from around the wicket.
The latter wicket left Yorkshire at 110-7 in the 48th over.
Overseas spinner Keshav Maharaj has counter-attacked against Harmer, including a slog-swept six over mid-wicket, and will resume after lunch on 26 alongside captain Steve Patterson on two.

Good morning from Chelmsford, where it is overcast and a touch chilly ahead of day three.
Yorkshire find themselves under pressure as they resume on 38-3 in their second innings, trailing by 82. Adam Lyth and Harry Brook are the men charged with kick-starting the revival.
If these two can bat through the morning session, it will be a different game on a pitch which is providing assistance to the bowlers through seam, swing and uneven bounce.
