As the city of York celebrated its first day of county cricket in 129 years, Warwickshire were the happier of the two counties following a polished bowling display at Clifton Park.
Gary Ballance posted 54, David Willey 46 and Will Fraine 42 after the hosts were invited to bat following an uncontested toss, only for them to close on 208-8 from 66.4 overs.
A delayed start and three further interruptions due to rain played their part on a historic day for York Cricket Club and the White Rose county, with 29 overs lost in front of a 2,560 crowd.
But so did a mid-afternoon loss of five wickets for eight runs in 10.1 overs as Yorkshire slipped from 93-1 to 101-6, with seamers Craig Miles and Oliver Hannon-Dalby doing the damage.
Miles (4-32 from 11 overs) struck three times in eight balls without conceding a run, while Hannon-Dalby – something his team-mate also did – claimed two wickets in an over on the way to 3-60 from 17.4.
Unfortunately, York CC duo Jack Leaning and Jonny Tattersall fell for nought and four respectively.
Thankfully, however, there was an entertaining evening fightback led by Willey and eighth-wicket partner Steve Patterson, who advanced from 145 for seven with a 60 stand. Patterson will begin day two unbeaten on 36.
Former Yorkshire quick Hannon-Dalby made the initial breakthrough when he slanted one across Adam Lyth and had him caught behind, leaving the score at 8-1 in the seventh over.
Ballance and opener Fraine then shared 85 for the second wicket either side of lunch to steady things, with the latter navigating good pace and carry to post a career best 42 in his eighth first-class game.
While the pair were not without fortune, Warwickshire bowled a touch short before improving after lunch to take advantage of both swing and seam on offer.
Fraine was the first of the five quick afternoon wickets to fall, superbly caught at mid-wicket by a diving Matt Lamb off Miles, leaving the score at 93-2 in the 30th.
Two balls later, Miles claimed his second wicket of the over when he trapped Tom Kohler-Cadmore lbw for nought.
The ex-Gloucestershire quick struck again in his next when he bowled home boy Leaning for nought, the third wicket to fall with the score on 93.
Unfortunately, wickets continued to tumble, with Hannon-Dalby also claiming two in an over. He had Tattersall caught at second slip for four before Jordan Thompson was trapped lbw for the third duck of the afternoon – 101-6 in the 40th.
Ballance reached his fifth Championship fifty of the season off 111 balls shortly before tea, brought forward by 15 minutes due to rain, only to fall lbw to Patel afterwards as Yorkshire fell to 145-7 in the 51st over.
Incredibly, this was the first time the Ashes contending left-hander had not converted a fifty into a Division One hundred in 2019.
Willey, back in the side after missing last week’s draw at Surrey for family reasons, and Patterson then gave Warwickshire something to think about with an entertaining 13-over partnership, including a six over long-on for Patterson off Patel’s off-spin.
But Willey was bowled by Miles in the 64th over, clipping off bail, as the score fell to 205-8. Only 3.1 overs more play were possible.
