Scorecard

Following the washout of day one, play got under way on time on day two with the visitors winning the toss and electing to bowl first.

Alex Lees and Ben Birkhead took the score to 24 before, in the sixth over, Birkhead was caught behind for 13. Tom Loten entered the fray and was at the other end whilst four further wickets fell before lunch. Lees for eight, Jack Leaning, Matthew Waite and Josh Shaw all for one each. At lunch, Yorkshire were 73-5, Loten unbeaten on 26 from 81 balls and James Wainman four not out.

Whatever they had for lunch certainly worked as the pair remained unbeaten throughout the afternoon session. Loten was first to reach 50 from 114 balls, with nine fours and he was followed, a few overs later, by Wainman – his coming from 79 balls with eight fours. They both played the situation, defending when required and attacking when possible.

At 3.36 pm Loten hit his 19th four to bring up his maiden 2nd XI 100. I don’t normally express an opinion in these reports but it was an innings of great maturity for such a young man. At tea he and Wainman had taken the score to 258-5, a partnership of 190 from 262 balls.

The pair had extended their partnership to 202 when Tom was adjudged lbw – he had made 131 from 204 balls including 23 fours. Ed Barnes joined Wainman and he made 30 from 41 balls (five fours) before being bowled. They added 53 in 79 balls and shortly before Barnes’ dismissal, Wainman also reached his maiden century from 198 balls with 15 fours. Wainman advanced to 117 when he was caught behind – the score 347-8.

The final six overs of the day added some icing on the cake as Matthew Taylor and Jared Warner added 80 from 37 balls, Taylor 36 not out from 34 (6×4) and Jared 49 not out from 22 balls, with four fours and five sixes, including four in the final over of the day.
