Education Day is an annual event which was established in 2014 which welcomes over 600 children to Emerald Headingley Cricket Ground for the day, normally held in June. Twenty schools across all part of Yorkshire attend a range of workshops focusing on education and sport. The day is often based around the International team playing at Headingley that year.

The event aims to engage a variety of schools from all across Yorkshire to an International Sporting Venue, encouraging the children to participate within sport and educational activities through a diverse range of activities. As well as giving the children more knowledge and understanding about Yorkshire’s rich cricketing history and heritage.

After registration the day begins when the 600 children and their teachers enjoy an assembly sat in the Community Stand to watch a Spirit of Cricket video on the big screen and a live interview with a Yorkshire CCC player quizzing them about their education and pathway to becoming a professional cricketer.

Each school then departs the stand to attend the first of four workshops across the day. These workshops are located in the Clean Slate Pavilion classrooms overlooking the ground as well as on the ground itself.

Of the four workshops, every school plays a game of Kwik Cricket on the hallowed Headingley turf as well as a session themed around the nation playing against England at Headingley during the season. These workshops can vary from a traditional dance to a cultural event or song depending on the country touring that summer. The educational workshops with a twist; broaching subjects that aren’t traditionally on the National Curriculum such as law, first aid and cancer awareness.

Education Day has the ability to provide alternative, thought provoking workshops alongside the once in a lifetime opportunity to play cricket on the Headingley outfield. The project has become an integral part of the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation’s educational offer.
