Bennison has a Lancashire legend Will-ing him on

Will Bennison. He must be a good’un if Lancastrians are talking him up!

“He’s the real deal – a proper, proper player,” said David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd upon hearing the news of Bennison being awarded a two-year rookie contract at Headingley in July.

Lloyd, the former Lancashire captain and coach, now lives in God’s Own County, with his wife Diana hailing from York.

They are based close to Sheriff Hutton Bridge CC, where 18-year-old top order batter Bennison plays his league cricket and has been making waves in recent years.

Lloyd regularly watches down at Sheriff Hutton and likes what he sees.

Bennison, who also bowls handy leg-spin, has learnt his trade at both Sheriff Hutton Bridge and Ouseburn Cricket Clubs.

He has been with Yorkshire since Under 10s and has come through the age-groups and the club’s famed Academy.

A heavy run-scorer for the Academy and Yorkshire’s second-team, shortly before the awarding of his first professional contract with the White Rose he scored a century for an England Young Lions Invitational XI against India Under 19s.

He also captained St Peter’s School of York in a Lord’s final in 2024.

Right-hander Bennison first played for Yorkshire seconds in 2022.

He has scored two hundreds at that level, firstly 106 off 95 balls against Surrey last year at York, helping them chase down a mammoth 407 to win a Championship match. He batted at five on that occasion.

At the start of this summer – the opening game of 2025 – he scored an unbeaten 203 in the second innings of a win over Warwickshire in a four-day friendly at the Edgbaston Community Ground.

On that occasion, Yorkshire were chasing 403, and they won by seven wickets.

Bennison opened the batting then.

Put simply, he is clearly a player who stands up when he’s needed most.

That trait will serve him well as his career progresses, especially if it’s against Lancashire.

Bumble might not be too happy then, however.
