Jack Thornton hit a debut 71 as Yorkshire’s D40 Quest side won their first game of the season yesterday against Wales at Thurgoland.
The White Rose’s disability first team won by four wickets chasing a 40-over target of 226, with Thornton coming in at 61-2 in the seventh over after Wales had been bowled out for 225.
Kyle Clayton claimed a superb 4-18 from eight overs for Yorkshire, while captain Cameron Cooper returned an important 3-38 from eight. Lewis Daniels also struck twice added to a Cooper-affected run out.
A number of Yorkshire batters made starts in their successful chase – openers James O’Connor and Curtis Sugden made 23 apiece, Owen Morris 18 and Clayton 25.
But the key duo were Thornton and Daniyal Zaman with 31.
They shared a crucial 81 for the fourth wicket from 69-3 in the 10th over.
Yorkshire still had work to do when Zaman fell, at 150-4 in the 24th over, but Thornton impressively led the way in his first Quest appearance for the county.
In all, he hit 15 fours in 63 balls as Yorkshire won with 7.3 overs to spare.
Yorkshire’s first win of the season came at the fourth attempt. The only downside was that it handed Lancashire the tag of North Group winners, with third-placed Wales now unable to catch them.
The White Rose have two games remaining, both away. They travel to Cheshire a week on Sunday before facing the Red Rose county on August 2.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire’s S9 softball side were beaten away at Cheshire yesterday.
