Sterre Kalis praised team-mate to be Em Arlott after her impressive all-round contribution helped current county Warwickshire beat future county Yorkshire at Edgbaston today.
Kalis, a former Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix colleague of Arlott’s, will link up with the England international again in 2027. But, before then Arlott is trying to sign off from Bears’ duty in style with success in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
Arlott crashed 44 off 19 balls and took three wickets against a Yorkshire side who were off colour today, chiefly in the field.
“I think we were really sloppy in the field to start with,” said Kalis, who top-scored in Yorkshire’s chase of 260 with a pleasing 52.
“We dropped Em, we dropped Meg (Austin, 94).
“I think we dropped seven catches today and lost quite a few in the field. I do think from both sides that’s probably a big difference if you think about it.
“We know that, and we have a week off where we have to do a bit more on that and then play our best cricket next Wednesday against Surrey at Ampleforth.”
Kalis continued: “Em’s done really well today. Obviously, she showed why she’s such an important player, both with the bat and obviously with the ball.
“Her innings was really classy and brought a lot of momentum to their innings.”
Warwickshire posted 269-9 from their 50 overs before rain reduced Yorkshire’s chase to 46 overs and altered their target to 260. They were bowled out for 202.
“I think we gave them a few too many runs,” reflected Kalis.
“The pitch wasn’t too bad.
“It was obviously a used pitch, but once you were in it was ok.”
Yorkshire slipped to 51-4 before Kalis shared 46 for the fifth wicket with Ami Campbell and then 47 for the sixth with Sarah Glenn.
“Maybe myself and Glenny’s partnership should have been probably doubled to win that game,” said Kalis.
“We probably just lacked one more partnership, maybe at the top end which you could really kick on from.”
And on the prospect of a reunion with Arlott at Headingley next summer, Kalis added: “Today, she really showed what she can do.
“She’s going to be a very good addition to our squad next year, and I’m actually so excited to be back playing with her. She’s good fun, and she will bring so much value to us on and off the field.”
