Joe Root is targeting top spot in the world rankings for his England Test team.

Root’s second-innings century against Sri Lanka in Kandy was no small part in England’s first away series victory since beating South Africa in early 2016.

Since Root started his Test career in late 2012, England have only won two series on the road; his debut series in India and that aforementioned South African success.

Recently, humblings have come in India and Australia, and England have failed to beat Bangladesh.

But this excellent display in Sri Lanka – 2-0 with one to play in Colombo on Friday – has been full of attacking and entertaining cricket.
