I’m sure many of you will have noticed my name absent from the second-team scorecards in recent weeks. Well, I’ve been sidelined by a complete rupture of my hamstring tendon which has required surgery to put back together.
I’m now in the recovery stage, with plenty of physio and return to fitness tests.
I’m hitting all the checkpoints, which is nice. But it’s just a tough slog. That’s the best way I could describe it. It’s day after day in the gym and in the swimming pool.
We were just heading into our T20 block when I suffered the injury.
I was batting for Driffield Town on a Sunday and dived in for a quick single. As a I launched off my left leg, I felt it pop. It wasn’t actually painful, which was weird. And I batted on with a runner because I thought it might just be cramp. I was 28 at the time and ended up getting 68 on one leg.
I had the scan a couple of days later, and it was a grade four, which is the highest grade of tear you can get. I was told that batting on didn’t do any further damage, and that I didn’t feel any pain because the tendon was completely disconnected. Basically, all the damage had already been done.
I’m now week seven post-surgery and am back to lifting proper weights and squatting. I’m looking to do some 50 percent jogging this week and some underarm batting and keeping drills, having been on crutches for four weeks.
We aren’t putting a timeframe on a full recovery. I’ll just work as hard as I can and see how things go.
What it does mean is that I will probably head out to Australia for the full winter again to play some grade cricket. Initially, I was planning to just go after Christmas and have a break for the first half of the winter. But that’s kind of been forced on me now.
One thing this last few weeks has enabled me to do is start my own business. I’ve been working with a local coffee roaster in Driffield who roasts his own coffee for his shop.
I’m starting my own coffee bean business, and we’ve basically been trying to formulate some blends. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I’ll be selling my own coffee.
I’ve been working on that every day, and it’s been really exciting and fulfilling. The business is called Third Session Coffee – a bit of a cricket reference.
I’ve seen a decent amount of the Yorkshire lads play over the last few weeks, and they’re going very nicely in the Blast.
Rev has played two fantastic knocks, hasn’t he, against Derbyshire and Durham to get us over the line.
It’s obviously been a bit frustrating in the Championship, just not getting over the line against Warwickshire at Scarborough and then losing at Leicestershire. I think I’m right in saying that had we won both games, we’d have been second in the table.
It just goes to show how tight the division is. We just need to find that consistency.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, that I absolutely love my tennis. So I’ve been glued to Wimbledon over the last week or so. I’m possibly even going down this weekend, because I’ve got a friend who works for Wimbledon and might be able to sort me out with some tickets.
I absolutely love Novak Djokovic. In my eyes, he’s one of the greatest sports stars of all time. Any time he’s on the BBC, I’m straight on it because he’s an absolute machine. The hunger he’s still got to be playing at the age he is, it’s absolutely incredible. He’s certainly a role-model for me in terms of how I look after myself.
And, is it coming home? I’m not sure. I certainly hope so.
It was a brilliant win against Mexico the other night, but I’m just a bit nervous about our defence. I certainly think we’ve got enough going forwards, though.
