Joe Root bemoaned England’s failures with bat and ball as they slipped to an opening Test defeat in South Africa.

The Yorkshire star pointed to an inability to bowl the hosts out in the first innings at Centurion following a promising start and then falling from 142-3 to 181 all out in reply as the chief reasons for disappointment.

The England captain admitted that the illness which has spread through the touring party, affecting both players and support staff, has been disruptive. But he refused to use it as an excuse for going 1-0 down at the start of the four-match series.
