Yorkshire’s bowlers, led by the excellent Jack White, piled the pressure on Warwickshire as they replied to a first-innings reply 469 to keep themselves ahead at the halfway stage of their Rothesay County Championship fixture at Scarborough.
The White Rose advanced their first innings from 386-6 overnight during an entertaining first 65 minutes of play on day two, which saw Jonny Bairstow reach 50 off 46 balls, Ethan Bamber strike twice in three balls and Hassan Ali hoist back-to-back sixes over long-on against Ed Barnard.
They then reduced the Bears to 92-4 during the latter stages of the afternoon, and they later closed on 225-7 from 79 overs.
New-ball seamer White claimed three of the first four wickets and finished with 3-39 from 16 overs. Visiting opener Rob Yates top-scored with 65, while their captain Barnard finished with three wickets and 60 not out.
Dom Bess also contributed significantly to Yorkshire’s position of strength with two wickets and a stunning one-handed catch.

Yorkshire skipper Bairstow reached his fifty – the third batter to do so in the innings – in the day’s opening over before he miscued a drive at Ethan Bamber to cover. When Dom Bess chipped the same bowler to mid-wicket two balls later, Yorkshire were 406-8 in the 101st.
Bamber, Barnard and Indian left-arm spinner Manav Suthar all finished with three wickets apiece. The former is now the leading wicket-taker in Division One with 32.
Hassan shared 56 for the ninth wicket with George Hill (30) and hit the two aforementioned sixes to help secure a fifth batting bonus point for reaching 450.
Warwickshire also claimed their third bowling point just in the nick of time, at the start of the 110th over, when Hill was caught at slip sweeping at Suthar’s spin.
Barnard then wrapped up the innings when he uprooted an attacking Hassan’s leg-stump.

White forced Alex Davies to chop on as he aimed an injudicious cut eight balls into Warwickshire’s reply. And just after lunch, the Bears were reduced to 38-2 when Dan Mousley was non-committal against a Hassan delivery which kept a touch low and edged it onto his middle stump.
Sam Hain was dropped in the slips on seven and added 48 with Yates before chipping the first ball of a new spell from White softly to mid-wicket, leaving the score at 86-3.
And with the first ball of White’s next over, Bess took that aforementioned one-handed stunner going low to his left at mid-wicket to help remove Australian Beau Webster.
Warwickshire reached tea on 124-4 from 47 overs, with the afternoon also seeing two spectators in fancy dress as a butcher and pig sprint across the outfield during an impromptu drinks break.
Bess then struck two key blows in as many balls with his off-spin, when a full ball bowled Yates off his pad before Zen Malik edged behind pushing forwards. That left the visitors at 146-6.

Barnard and Suthar then resisted to share 64.
Barnard reached his fifty off 87 balls, while Suthar had made his way to 33 when he advanced down the pitch at Hill, only to not commit to the stroke and edge behind – 210-7.
Yorkshire will get the use of a second new ball one over into tomorrow as they bid to give themselves the option of enforcing the follow-on. The Bears must reach 320 to take that out of the equation.
Keith Barker, dropped in the slips off Ben Cliff just before close, will resume on nine in the morning.
