Only the morning session of day two – added to four overs in the afternoon – was played between Yorkshire and Surrey at Headingley because of rain. But there was plenty of action.
The weather initially intervened just as Surrey were about to begin their reply to Yorkshire’s 486 all out, which including Jonny Bairstow’s 120 and Adam Lyth’s 141.
Yorkshire started the day on 362 for four. And while they would have wanted more having started on 362 for four, they were able to get within sight of 500 and claim four batting points.
George Hill also added 34 and Dom Bess 42.
After a near two-hour delay from 1.50pm, play then resumed for 20 minutes as Surrey advanced their reply to 17-0 from four overs bowled by new-ball pair Jhye Richardson and Jack White.
Matthew Fisher removed Bairstow in the day’s second over – caught superbly by a diving Jordan Clark at wide mid-on. Fisher finished with 4-92 from 25 overs.
Clark’s seam accounted for two wickets; Lyth caught at first slip and Jhye Richardson at long-leg to end the innings. Dan Lawrence also struck twice added to a Dan Worrall wicket.
The players had returned to the field after lunch to start the Surrey reply, only for umpires Michael Gough and James Middlebrook to call for the covers amidst light rain.
There was a resumption, but unfortunately not for long and there was no more play beyond 4pm.
Meanwhile, England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith was on the field this morning but didn’t take the gloves for Surrey having taken a blow on the right hand late on day one.
Josh Blake deputised behind the stumps.
In all, 59 overs were lost, with play abandoned just before 5.45pm.
