• UrbanChain becomes Yorkshire Cricket’s exclusive energy partner and supplier
  • Headingley to be powered by 100% renewable energy from January 2027
  • Partnership begins ambition to see “Yorkshire powered by Yorkshire”, with UrbanChain connecting the Club with local renewable generators
  • Agreement supports the Club’s ten-year Chasing Glory strategy and long-term vision for Headingley

Yorkshire County Cricket Club has agreed a new commercial partnership with the clean energy technology company UrbanChain, which will see Headingley powered by 100% renewable energy for the first time.

The agreement sees UrbanChain become Yorkshire Cricket’s exclusive energy partner, with renewable energy to be supplied from 1st January 2027.

Fast-growing clean energy technology company UrbanChain connects renewable energy generators to buyers, thereby providing users with greater choice, visibility and control over where their power comes from.

Its private energy market is already used by a diverse range of organisations, matching demand with renewable generation and the energy provided to Headingley from next year will come from a range of renewable sources, with the ambition to source more power from the county of Yorkshire in the coming years.

The partnership between Yorkshire Cricket and UrbanChain is part of the club’s commitment to reenergise Headingley, while leading positive social and environmental change. Earlier this year the club’s Chasing Glory strategy outlined an ambitious ten-year plan to secure Yorkshire’s future.

Daniel Matson, Commercial Director at Yorkshire Cricket, said: “This new partnership reflects our desire to build a club with a sustainable future and demonstrates our commitment to being a responsible, forward-thinking organisation making a positive impact. Partnering with UrbanChain means the energy powering Headingley is renewable, and we’ll have visibility over where it’s come from. Over time we’ll be drawing on more energy generated right here as Yorkshire is powered by Yorkshire.

“We’ve been really impressed with UrbanChain’s vision to engage businesses and organisations across Yorkshire, which aligns closely with our own ambition to reach and create impact across every corner of the county.

“Our partnerships are focused on creating genuine strategic value for the businesses we work with. We look forward to using Yorkshire Cricket’s platform, reach and connections to support UrbanChain’s growth and ambitions across the county, while they help us deliver a more sustainable future for Headingley.

For UrbanChain, the partnership complements a broader drive to support Yorkshire’s economy by building long-term relationships with businesses across the region and expanding access to transparently sourced renewable energy. Yorkshire is a region with a diverse economy, strong industrial base and a growing renewable energy sector where there is strong potential to scale a local energy market.

Charlie Parry, Chief Growth Officer at UrbanChain, said: “Yorkshire County Cricket Club is more than a cricket club. It’s one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable institutions. That’s why this partnership matters. We’re not just supporting the club, we’re powering it.

“By connecting businesses more directly with renewable generation, we’re demonstrating how energy can be bought and sold in a way that’s more transparent, more local and more valuable for everyone involved. We want this partnership to be a showcase for what’s possible when Yorkshire businesses are powered by Yorkshire renewable energy.”

As one of the most recognisable sporting venues in the region, Headingley will provide a high-profile demonstration of how organisations can access renewable energy with greater transparency, traceability and control.

Founded in 2017, UrbanChain has built an Ofgem-licensed energy platform that uses intelligent matching and verified provenance to connect renewable generators directly with consumers on a half-hourly basis.
