County-by-county preview
Good morning...
From North Marine Road…
It’s dry but chilly ahead of our opening Group B clash with Warwickshire.
Yorkshire are pursuing their first piece of limited overs silverware since 2002, when Anthony McGrath was in the side who beat Somerset in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy final at Lord’s.
They’ve had a few near misses – semi-final qualification, etc – in the various incarnations of this competition, plus a final appearance in the T20 Blast.
Unfortunately, though, the county haven’t been able to take that final step. Could this be the year? Fingers crossed.
Confidence is certainly high. The squad, not hugely affected by Hundred call-ups, head into today’s game with a spring in their step following the Championship victory over Sussex at Scarborough last week.
Warwickshire also look strong on paper. While Yorkshire missed out on knockout qualification last year, the Bears went on to reach the semi-finals. Yorkshire actually won the group stage meeting between the two at Rugby School.
Yorkshire’s nine-team group also includes Durham, Kent, Lancashire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Somerset and Sussex. The top three qualify for the knockouts. The top team in each of the two groups advances to a home semi-final. The four second and third placed teams across the two groups advance to the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals and semi-finals take place during the final week of the month before a final at Trent Bridge on September 20.
