Dickie tributes

Good morning...
From Headingley, where it’s a dry and bright morning ahead of our final-round Rothesay County Championship match against Durham.
Durham are second-bottom in Division One on 140 points, Hampshire third from bottom on 142 and Yorkshire next – in seventh place – on 146.
Hampshire play second-placed Surrey at the Utilita Bowl this week, the latter needing to win to have any chance of retaining their title.
With Hampshire in the mix, Yorkshire could lose this week and still potentially stay up.
But let’s simplify things for now and concentrate on Yorkshire and Durham.
The White Rose’s six-point lead is effectively seven given they have three wins to Durham’s two. Most wins is the first tie-breaker should teams finish level on points.
You can read our preview for this match, with Anthony McGrath, via the link above.
There is also a piece with departing all-rounder Jordan Thompson linked above, which we published earlier in the week, about his time at Yorkshire. Matt Milnes will also bid farewell after this week. After injury frustrations in his first two years at Headingley, it’s been good to see him hit form in the last few months. Fingers crossed they both have good weeks before moves to Warwickshire and Kent respectively.
Yorkshire Cricket and the cricketing world in general are in mourning following the passing of legendary umpire Dickie Bird at the age of 92, announced by the club yesterday.
Every single one of the Yorkshire players who take the field today will have a Dickie tale to tell. He was that kind of gent. A real people person.
Fingers crossed, he’s looking down with a broad smile on his face come Saturday evening.
Enjoy the day.
