Bad light. Sussex 84-4, 23.1 overs

Yorkshire keep plugging away.

Tom Alsop 12 and James Coles 23.

The light has actually got better. We have 17 overs remaining after this one.

Light starting to close in

Sussex are 59-3 in the 16th over, and the sun has disappeared. We still have 21 overs remaining following this one.

It would be a significant surprise if we saw them all.

Sussex 47-3, 11.3 overs

Oli Carter caught behind Jonny Bairstow bowled Matt Milnes, 16.

Carter edges to first slip and George Hill drops it onto Bairstow’s foot and he grabs the rebound.

Oli Carter has 16, James Coles 8.

These two are aiming to settle things down after the two early wickets.

Sussex 26-2, 7.5 overs

Not sure you’d quite call this a Jordan Thompson counter-attack, but he’s certainly played positively, as you’d expect him to.

He has moved to 30 out, sharing 58 for the eighth wicket with Mayank Agarwal, who has 24.

Yorkshire 143-7, 49th over

Yorkshire are 47-0, with Adam Lyth 20 and Fin Bean 19.

Yorkshire 44-0, 16th over

Adam Lyth has 19 and Fin Bean 17.

There have been a few confident shouts from the Sussex bowlers and fielders and lbws and caught behinds, including one for the latter against Adam Lyth recently which had a frustrated Ollie Robinson kicking at the turf.

Yorkshire 20-0, 10 overs

Adam Lyth has 10 and Fin Bean 7.

Looks a decent surface here at Hove.

Bean and Lyth have hit a boundary apiece so far.

Yorkshire 7-0, 5th over

It’s been a quiet start here at Hove, where there hasn’t been a boundary yet.

104 overs planned

The day will be extended today by eight overs to try and make up some of what was lost yesterday. And there’s a good chance we’ll get all of them in.

The toss is about to take place.

Good morning...

From The 1st Central County Ground, Hove, where the sun is shining ahead of day two, which will effectively be day one given the frustrations of yesterday.

There are no issues today. The covers are off, the players are about to start warming up, and we’re all good for a 10.30am start.

You would think that one more win from two games for these two counties – Sussex are 12 points clear of second-bottom Durham and Yorkshire nine – will seal safety ahead of 2026. Whether there is enough time to get a positive result this week remains to be seen.

The toss will be an interesting one. Look up and it’s a batting day. But the pitch has been under cover for quite some time. That may swing the decision towards bowl first today.

There was only one game which started across either division yesterday. That was the top-of-the-table Division One clash between leaders Surrey and second-placed Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval. There’s one point between them, the winner pretty much assured of the title.

They actually played a full day, with Notts bowled out for 231 and Surrey 43-1 in reply. Matthew Fisher took five wickets.

We spoke to Gavin Hamilton while we were waiting for play here at Hove yesterday, with our general manager of cricket speaking about men’s recruitment ahead of 2026 and the second half of the season form.

That’s available via the embedded X post above.

Enjoy the day.

When you look down the list of Yorkshire’s best bowling figures in first-class cricket, there are plenty of highlights to choose from. Three players have taken 10 wickets in an innings, for example, the great Hedley Verity doing it twice. Plenty of nine-fers too. But another one catches the eye. Ted Peate’s 8-5 against Surrey at Holbeck in 1883.
