Steve Patterson

“It was a tough day’s cricket.
“We didn’t expect it to be a minefield, and we thought that if there was anything in the pitch it would be this morning before the sun came out and baked it.
“Getting a wicket in the first over gave us a bit of hope it was going to be a good day. ?“Then we dropped an easy chance quite early off Jordan and it got quite tough from there.
“By and large, we bowled quite well as a unit when you consider we have quite a depleted bowling attack. We stuck at it well.”

6.01pm – Close Essex finish on 234-3 from 96 overs. Cook 107 the centrepiece of the day, while Walter finished on 89. Thompson, Bess and Patterson the wicket-takers for Yorkshire.

5.42pm WICKET Cook plays on aiming a pull at Patterson, falling for 107. Essex 230-3 in the 92nd over. That ends a 174 stand with Walter (85 not out).

5.28pm Cook reaches his 71st career century off 255 balls with 14×4s. Fine knock. Essex 224-2 in the 89th over. But he’s flashes a drive into the slips almost afterwards, off Thompson, and Brook can’t cling on.

5.12pm Essex are now 209-2 in the 86th over. Cook moves to 95 and Walter has 77.

5.05pm Yorkshire’s women are heading to Finals Day at Northern CC in Liverpool on Sunday. Here’s our preview with coach Mark Harrison.

Finals Day.

4.50pm Yorkshire have taken the new ball, with Essex 178-2 after 80 overs. Thompson returns. Cook has 74 and Walter 71. Big 75 minutes of play coming up. Could still be 230-6 at close.

4.26pm Walter and Cook have shared their century stand as Essex move to 159-2 after 73 overs. New ball due shortly.

4.06pm Walter reaches his fifty off 145 balls with 6×4s. Essex 146-2 after 67 overs.

Tea Report Yorkshire have gone wicketless through the first afternoon session of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Essex at Chelmsford, the hosts reaching tea at 138-2 from 66 overs.

After morning strikes for Jordan Thompson and Dom Bess left Essex at 56-2 in the 21st over, the hosts have advanced through left-handed pair Sir Alastair Cook and Paul Walter, who have shared an unbroken 82.

Cook has reached an unbeaten 62 as he eyes his 71st first-class career century.

Yorkshire will rue a trio of dropped catches, two of which have come this afternoon with Walter on 12 and 16. He offered a return chance to Steve Patterson and a tough low chance to George Hill at third slip off the captain’s bowling.

Walter will begin the evening on 42 on a slow and low surface.

3.41pm – Tea Essex have reached 138-2 from 66 overs. Cook 62 and Walter 43 have batted through the session unbeaten. Slow going, which is the next best thing for Yorkshire, who have been unable to break through as they would have hoped so far on the opening day.

3.22pm Closing stages of the afternoon, and Essex have moved to 126-2 after 60 overs. Cook (61) and Walter (36) are grinding out the runs on a slow and low surface.

2.50pm Cook reaches his fifty off 142 balls as the Essex scores moves to 104-2 in the 52nd over. Walter has 24.

2.39pm Essex have reached 100-2 after 48 overs. Cook 47 and Walter 24. Whilst Yorkshire haven’t got the wickets they would have hoped today, with a couple of dropped catches contributing, they have held the rate very well. Bess and Thompson searching for the wickets.

2.02pm Patterson can’t hold onto a return chance with Walter on 12. Essex 79-2 after 38 overs.

1.48pm Essex 76-2 after 35 overs, three overs bowled since lunch by Revis and Patterson. Cook has moved to 36 and Walter 12. We are bathed in sunshine now, and it’s pretty warm too.

Lunch Report Jordan Thompson and Dom Bess struck once apiece during a hard-fought opening morning against Essex at Chelmsford.

Essex, invited to bat on a green pitch which has offered some help through both seam and spin, have reached lunch at 63-2 from 32 overs.

Yorkshire have come into this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture, their fourth of the season, on the back of two draws and a win and have picked Joe Root in place of the injured Haris Rauf as the only change from last week’s draw against Kent.

Ben Coad was in the squad ahead of a potential first game of the season following a groin injury, though has missed out again.

Thompson struck with only the third ball of the match when he had left-handed Nick Browne caught low down at third slip by George Hill – 0-1.

Essex only scored their first run in the sixth over, and former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has led the way with an unbeaten 31.

The second wicket came with the fourth ball bowled by off-spinner Bess, in the 21st over, when Essex captain Tom Westley was caught behind cutting for 24, leaving Essex at 56-2. Westley had been dropped at first slip on four by Harry Brook off Thompson.

Paul Walter will begin the afternoon unbeaten on four.

1pm – Lunch Essex, having been inserted, have reached lunch at 63-2 from 32 overs. Wickets for Thompson and Bess. Cook 31 and Walter 4.

12.22pm WICKET Bess breaks through with only his fourth ball as Essex captain Westley is caught behind cutting for 24. It’s 56-2 in the 21st.

12.18pm We’re through 20 overs, with Essex 56-1. Westley has 24 and Cook 28. Bess about to enter the attack.

12.04pm Essex will be delighted with their position at 38-1 after 17 overs following a wicket with the third ball of the match. Hill into the attack to break the Cook (21) and Westley (15) partnership.

11.44am Revis has just come to the end of his second over, with Essex now 20-1 after 12 overs. Patterson is returning to the attack in place of Thompson.

11.32am Life for Westley on four as he’s dropped by Brook at first slip off Thompson – decent height to his left. Essex 10-1 in the ninth.

11.21am Essex have recorded their first run off the 35th ball of the match, a Cook single into mid-wicket against Patterson. It’s 1-1 after six overs now.

11.02am WICKET. Super start for Yorkshire. Browne has been caught low down at third slip by Hill off Thompson, 0. Essex are 0-1 after three balls.

9.20am You can recap our match previews and features below, before we get going. We have spoken to both assistant coach Ali Maiden and man of the moment Harry Brook, who enjoyed a match to remember here in 2018.

Preview here.

Harry Brook here.

Good morning from a cloudy Chelmsford ahead of day one of our clash with Essex.

Plenty of cloud around in the South this morning, though reasonably bright and we are all set for a start on time at 11am.

Unbeaten Yorkshire – two draws and a win – face an Essex side who have won one, drawn one and lost one so far this season.

Yorkshire head into this fixture on the back of last week’s frustrating draw against Kent, when bad light prevented a chase of 114 in the final 21 overs. George Hill kind of summed up the mood!

Essex also drew at home last week, but they came from behind against Northamptonshire.

The players are just starting their warm-ups here, where the ground-staff are putting the final touches to a pitch which looks pretty green.

Joe Root will come in for his first appearance of the summer, while Essex will field another former England captain, Sir Alastair Cook.

There will be a live stream available once more when we get going. Enjoy the day.
