Joe Root’s arrival in Australia to play in their forthcoming Big Bash is “huge” for the competition and the Yorkshire star can expect to be a busy boy during the next six weeks or so.

That is the view of former Sydney Thunder general manager Nick Cummins, now the chief executive of Cricket Tasmania.

Root is set for a seven-game spell with the Thunder, whose family orientated environment falls perfectly in line with that of the whole Big Bash.

“Sydney Thunder are very strong in the community,” said Cummins, who spent four years there before moving to Tasmania in April of last year to oversee both their state sides and the Hobart Hurricanes.

“Joe can expect to be signing a lot of autographs and spending a lot of time with the fans after the game, in the members bar and at all the functions they do.

“They try to bring the fans and players together a lot.

“Spotless Stadium is a terrific venue. It’s not that big, only 22,000. But they tend to sell out every game.
