George Hill says the Taunton pitch “didn’t do as much as we probably thought” after  Yorkshire took three day-one wickets against Somerset before the weather intervened.

Only 42 overs were bowled at the start of this 12th round Rothesay County Championship match, with the hosts 155-3 having been inserted.

Hill’s seam accounted for two wickets, added to his catch at first slip as fellow all-rounder Jordan Thompson took the other.

Former Yorkshire batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore top-scored with an opening 76 off 110 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes.

Hill claimed the first two wickets, removing opener Archie Vaughan caught behind and Tom Lammonby bowled.

After lunch, he helped Thompson get an attacking Kohler-Cadmore sharply caught at first slip.

Hill said: “It didn’t do as much as we probably thought it would, really, because obviously it was very green. It was quite dry underneath, so it was also a bit slower than we might have thought.

“There was a little bit of spin there on day one. Both of the ends have been scarified a bit.

“But three wickets, we stuck at it pretty well.

“Peps (Kohler-Cadmore) played the way he plays. He’s a very good player.

“Thankfully, he’s out now.”

Kohler-Cadmore played well but chanced his arm. On another day, he could have fallen cheaply.

“I said to some of the lads, ‘The better the pitch plays, the more reserved he’d be’ if that makes sense.

“As long as it was nipping, the harder he’d go.”

Asked how he thought Yorkshire had bowled today, he added: “We bowled alright.

“I think we were a touch short for the new ball.

“It’s tricky when you’ve got a bloke who’s constantly kind of charging you to be really brave and hold your length.

“That, potentially, is something we can look at – being a touch fuller.

“But it’s a really quick-scoring ground. It’s going to be quick-scoring all game, probably.

“Hopefully we rock up at 10.30am tomorrow with a bit of moisture in it and it nips around.”
