Matthew Revis spoke of a tough day at the office for Yorkshire’s batters as Surrey gained the early initiative on day one at The Kia Oval.
Revis contributed a determined and skilful 40, added to by James Wharton’s similar 45, as Yorkshire recovered from 1-3 to 92-3 following a delayed start until 1.10pm because of rain.
Unfortunately, they then slipped to 113-7 before closing on 133-7 when bad light interrupted us once more.
Dan Worrall struck three times for Surrey, while fellow seamers Matthew Fisher and Tom Lawes claimed two wickets apiece. Dom Bess 21 and Kuldeep Yadav 6 will aim to battle and scrap their way up towards 200 tomorrow.
Revis said: “The conditions probably suited bowling for most of the day.
“Obviously they’ve got a pretty good attack.
“They’ve managed to put in the right areas for most of the day, and unfortunately we probably just came out on the wrong side of the day.
“They put the ball in the right spots right from the get-go and made life very difficult for us.
“Myself and Wharts put on a decent partnership, but we fell away after tea from my wicket, and that cluster came again.
“Bessy’s grafted really hard there, and so has Kuldeep.
“Hopefully tomorrow morning we can come and scrap as hard as we can for the remainder of the innings and then hopefully put the ball in the right areas.”
On the pitch, Revis said: “Myself and Wharts spent a bit of time out there, and it looked to divot quite a bit. Length balls would carry through, and then little chunks of the pitch would come off.
“It felt a fraction two-paced. Some of them would carry through very nicely and then some of the balls would hardly carry to the keeper.
“So we’re just going to have to wait and see how the game plays out with the pitch.
“But I think if you hold your lengths and put the balls in the right area, then there’s more than enough there.”
And Revis added: “I think the more you can scrap for every run, come day two, day three, potentially day four kind of thing, that could be massive.”
