Andrew Gale has bemoaned the lack of consistency in Yorkshire’s batting following a “poor” display on day one versus Sussex at Hove.

The coach cut a frustrated figure after seeing his imposing line-up slip from 60-0 to 150 all out either side of lunch before Sussex responded with 118-3 at the start of this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture.

Yorkshire came into this clash on the back of last week’s 200-run win over Kent, when they posted 379 and 330-5 declared, including centuries for Adam Lyth and Joe Root.

Here, they were undone by three pre-lunch wickets for left-arm quick George Garton and failed to recover.

Still, the Yorkshire coach is far from ruling his side out of a comeback victory here, the hopes for which were boosted by a couple of late wickets for Duanne Olivier.

“We were poor if we’re being honest,” he said.

“With the calibre of batters we have in that line up, we haven’t done ourselves justice. That’s an understatement.

“The challenge is we have to bowl well and win three sessions tomorrow to get back in the game. Simple as that.

“It’s disappointing because, after last week, you’re looking for progression and consistency. So to bat like we did today against a young Sussex side, an inexperienced one, is disappointing.

“I don’t know what we put that down to. The preparation has been good going into the game. We didn’t feel like they weren’t switched on or up for the game. We had a good team meeting, but we gave our wickets away.

“Today has been a poor day, but by no means are we out of the game. We have to win three sessions.

“We don’t really want them getting more than a 70 or 80 lead.

“It still looks a pretty good wicket. We just have to bat better.”
