Jimmy Anderson has praised Joe Root for his leadership qualities on his first tour as England’s Test captain.

The 4-0 score line in Australia’s favour means it will not be a series the Yorkshire star remembers fondly, but vice-captain Anderson insists the 27-year-old can be proud of his efforts.

“Ask any captain who has toured Australia – it’s not an easy place to come, especially when you’re on the wrong end of results,” said the Lancashire man.

“The way he’s carried himself has been a credit to himself.

“He’s led the guys brilliantly both on and off the field. He should be very proud of what he’s done on this trip.”
