Rain limited Surrey and Yorkshire to just less than a session’s play on day two of their Specsavers County Championship match at the Oval, with the hosts maintaining the upper hand.
Surrey advanced their first innings from 366-7 overnight to 414 all out, with Ollie Pope finishing unbeaten on 158 not out off 224 balls.
Yorkshire were then restricted to 40-3 when play was halted 10 minutes before the scheduled lunch break.
Joe Root was unbeaten on 14 and Harry Brook on one.

Earlier, Tim Bresnan claimed two of Surrey’s three wickets to fall, finishing with 3-98 from 26.1 overs. Steve Patterson claimed the other to finish with 3-107 from 27.
Bresnan had Conor McKerr caught at first slip by Che Pujara following a ricochet from Adam Lyth’s chest at second slip.
He fell for 29, ending an 81-run stand for the eighth wicket with Pope and leaving the score at 373-8 in the third full over of the morning.
Patterson had Jade Dernbach caught at mid-off shortly afterwards for 14 as he looked for his second six before Bresnan wrapped up the innings by getting Amar Virdi superbly caught by a diving Jack Leaning at third slip, two hands high to his right.
Pope had advanced to his first career 150.
Yorkshire’s reply then got off to the worst possible start when Alex Lees fell for a golden duck after just two balls, caught low down at third slip by Dean Elgar off Dernbach 1-1.
That soon became 7-2 when Lyth was lbw to Sam Curran’s left-arm seamers before Pujara, like Lees, was caught low down in the slips off Curran – this time by Scott Borthwick at second slip for 17.
The Indian had to check the validity of the catch before departing. That left Yorkshire at 34-3 in the 12th.
Play took place under overcast skies all morning, so the rain wasn’t a surprise when it arrived. Unfortunately, it did not clear, with umpires Saggers and Millns drawing a line through the day just after 4.30pm.
Only 21.4 overs were bowled in the day.
