6:40pm Close! New Zealand’s batters negotiate the final four overs to finish the day 225 for 5. An good day of cricket in which England have bowled well and New Zealand battled hard. Things appear to be poised fairly evenly heading into day two!

We hope anyone that attended the opening day had a fantastic time!

6:24pm New Zealand continue to battle hard with the sixth wicket pairing of Daryl Mitchell (73 not out) and Tom Blundell (42 not out) combining once again. New Zealand are 217 for 5 with four overs remaining.

5:05pm Rain! The players are coming off the field as a shower hits at Headingley. New Zealand are 187 for 5. Once again it’s Daryl Mitchell in the runs; he’s unbeaten on 58 alongside Tom Blundell on 31 not out.

4:31pm A ball change! After a number of attempts to get the ball changed, England have finally had agreement from the umpires to do so, greeted by a celebrating Stuart Broad and loud applause from the crowd. New Zealand have batted well since tea, progressing to 154 for 4.

3:38pm Wicket! A second for Jack Leech and this one is bizarre! Henry Nicolls smashes it back at non-striker Darren Mitchell, with the ball deflecting of Mitchell’s bat and popping up in the air to Alex Lees who takes a straight forward catch. New Zealand are 123 for 5 at tea.

3:06pm A big appeal! Matty Potts hits the in-form Daryll Mitchell on the front pad. England’s big appeal is turned down and Ben Stokes opts not to review… it would have been out! New Zealand are 98 for 4.

2:15pm Wicket! Jamie Overton claims his first Test Match wicket, shaping the ball back into left-hander Devon Conway and bowling him off the inside edge.

1:01pm Lunch! England’s session as they reduce New Zealand to 65 for 3 having lost the toss. Stuart Broad has been the main threat. A big afternoon session awaits!

12:42pm Wicket, and it’s a big one! Stuart Broad has New Zealand captain Kane Williamson caught behind by Ben Foakes for 31. The set-up to the wicket ball was probably the difference, with the ball before shaping back into the right-hander and the wicket ball just holding its line. England in control here at Headingley.

11:55am Jack Leach comes on for an early bowl from the Howard Stand end and claims a wicket with his first ball. The left-armer removes opener Will Young lbw. The Kiwi batter reviewed the decision but it was not overturned. New Zealand 35 for 2.

11:41am Jamie Overton comes into the England attack for the first time in Test cricket. The Surrey seamer’s first ball is a sharp bouncer, 88mph, and the third shaped away slightly. Certainly a dangerous prospect for the batters.

11:05am Wicket! Stuart Broad gets the edge of Tom Latham’s bat off the final ball of the first over and the catch is happily accepted by Joe Root at first slip. New Zealand 0 for 1.

10:30am New Zealand win the toss and opt to bat first. The England and New Zealand teams are below…

9:45am Rooooooooot! The Yorkshireman is currently top of the ICC’s World Test Batting rankings and has scored hundreds in each of the last two Tests. Can he make a big score on his home ground?

9:30am A few snaps from England’s training session at Headingley yesterday. We are now an hour away from the toss. The weather is set fair and the pitch looks good, a day for batting you would imagine…
