Dan desperate for Headingley silverware

Left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty has already had a taste of silverware with Surrey, and now he wants more.

Moriarty’s career has been sprinkled with both personal and team success so far, including helping Yorkshire achieve promotion in the Rothesay County Championship last summer.

That was his first full campaign at Headingley having signed a three-year deal ahead of 2024 following a short loan spell midway through the previous season.

Moriarty was part of Surrey’s Championship title triumphs in 2022 and 2023 without being a regular starter. And that was a big reason for his move to Yorkshire – the desire for greater opportunity.

Moriarty was born in Reigate to an English father and a South African mother. He grew up in South Africa and represented their Under 19s side in 2016.

The now 26-year-old is a tall spinner who has enjoyed success with both the red and white balls.

He has taken 61 wickets in 21 career first-class appearances to date, including a best of 6-60, and has taken 78 wickets in 75 limited overs appearances, including 50-over, T20 and 100-ball cricket.

A former MCC Young Cricketer, Moriarty loves a debut.

On Championship debut for Surrey in 2021, against Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval, he claimed that aforementioned 6-60 in the first innings of a victory. (He had made his first-class debut for Surrey the season before in the Bob Willis Trophy).

On Championship debut for Yorkshire in June 2023, whilst on loan, he claimed 5-50 in the second innings of a draw at Headingley. Gloucestershire were on the receiving end again.

On T20 debut for Yorkshire last May, he claimed a career best 4-25 in victory over Worcestershire at Headingley.

Moriarty joined Yorkshire to add extra variation to a spin department including the off-spin of Dom Bess and the leg-spin of Jafer Chohan and Adil Rashid.

As Surrey reached the Vitality Blast final during the Covid summer of 2020, Moriarty was the leading spinner in the competition with 17 wickets, and he played once for Southern Brave in the Hundred in 2022.

In terms of his first full summer with Yorkshire, he claimed 12 wickets in eight Championship appearances, nine in eight in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and 14 in 13 in the Vitality Blast.
