Yorkshire County Cricket Club and BetterPoints West Yorkshire are pleased to announce a new partnership to encourage fans travelling to Headingley this summer to leave the car at home and get rewarded for it.

The free BetterPoints app, funded as a pilot by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), records sustainable journeys and converts them into real rewards, redeemable with national brands, local businesses or donated to charities.

The announcement follows in the footsteps of Leeds Rhinos, who are also rewarding fans for making sustainable travel choices to home fixtures at Headingley Stadium. Yorkshire CCC has become the latest major Leeds sporting institution to join the programme, extending the reach of the initiative to cricket supporters across the region too.

The partnership launches ahead of a landmark summer at Headingley, with the ground hosting a remarkable range of cricket across all formats from domestic T20 action to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, a men’s Test match against Pakistan, The Hundred, and an end-of-season England Men’s ODI.

How it works

Anyone who lives, works or studies in West Yorkshire can download the BetterPoints app for free and use the referral code YCC to link their account to the partnership. Every time a fan travels to or from Headingley by foot, bike, wheelchair, or public transport including by train to nearby Headingley or Burley Park stations, the app records their journey and they earn BetterPoints.

At every home fixture this summer, BetterPoints will be running individual match prize draws giving fans the chance to win bonus BetterPoints rewards on the day. But the headline prize is bigger still: everyone who travels sustainably to any participating Headingley fixture will be entered into one grand prize draw to win two tickets to watch England take on Sri Lanka in the 2nd Metro Bank One Day International at Headingley on Thursday 24 September 2026.

West Yorkshire fans are well placed to take advantage: Headingley is served by two nearby rail stations, Headingley and Burley Park, as well as frequent bus services from Leeds city centre and beyond, making sustainable travel a straightforward and enjoyable choice for the vast majority of supporters.

The BetterPoints app is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in West Yorkshire — which means that for the vast majority of fans attending matches at Headingley from Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, the rewards are right there to be earned. The only requirement is to record a sustainable journey using the app.

Jack Windle, Chief Sustainable Transport Officer at BetterPoins West Yorkshire said, “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Yorkshire Cricket for what is genuinely one of the most exciting summers of cricket Headingley has seen in years. From the Vitality Blast to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and a packed autumn ODI, there are so many moments this summer where thousands of West Yorkshire fans will be heading to Headingley. We want to help make those journeys greener, healthier, and more rewarding. Every recorded trip, whether you’re walking from Burley Park, cycling along the canal, or jumping on the bus earns real rewards. And of course, every sustainable journey to any fixture is a ticket into the draw for those England vs Sri Lanka seats in September. Following on from Leeds Rhinos partnership earlier this year, it’s brilliant to see another major Headingley club get behind the programme and to think that fans of both clubs could be earning rewards this summer just by making a simple change to how they travel.”

The partnership reflects a shared commitment between Yorkshire Cricket and BetterPoints West Yorkshire to reduce the environmental impact of match days at Headingley. Large sporting events can generate significant volumes of car traffic in the surrounding area, and both organisations are keen to demonstrate that there’s a better way, one that’s better for the environment, better for the local community, and better for fans themselves.

Jon Barnett, Director of Operations at Yorkshire CCC added, “Yorkshire Cricket is proud to play its part in making West Yorkshire a greener, more active place. We recognise the responsibility that comes with hosting major sporting events, and reducing the environmental and community impact of car travel to Headingley is something we’re genuinely committed to. BetterPoints West Yorkshire gives our fans a brilliant, tangible incentive to travel differently this summer and with the calendar of cricket we have ahead of us, there’s never been a better time to make that change.”

The BetterPoints West Yorkshire app launched earlier this year and thousands of residents across the five district councils Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield have signed up.

“We’re pleased to support this partnership, helping fans travel more safely and sustainably on matchdays as well as on everyday journeys.

“Our Vision Zero ambition is to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Leeds’ roads by 2040, which means making it easier and more appealing for people to choose safer, more sustainable travel options.

“We’re investing in key routes across the city, including improvements along the A660 into Headingley, but infrastructure alone isn’t enough, we also need to support long term behaviour change.

“By rewarding everyday journeys and linking them to people’s passion for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, BetterPoints can help encourage more positive travel choices.”

A Leeds City Council spokesperson also added: “We’re pleased to support this partnership, helping fans travel more safely and sustainably on matchdays as well as on everyday journeys.

“Our Vision Zero ambition is to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Leeds’ roads by 2040, which means making it easier and more appealing for people to choose safer, more sustainable travel options.”
