Matthew Revis hailed a superb “all-round” bowling display as Yorkshire took 15 wickets during the third day of their clash with Surrey at Headingley to put the county on course for what would be a superb victory.
Revis, George Hill and Harry Brook could all lay claim to the star billing today as Surrey, replying to a first-innings 486, fell from 17-0 overnight in their first innings to 204 all out.
Made to follow-on, they then closed on 83-5 second time around.
Hill claimed four wickets in the first innings and was the one who broke the day open before Revis added three in the first innings and one in the second.
Revis got Jamie Smith in the first innings and Dan Lawrence in both.
Brook then struck three times in the second innings, including bowling England team-mate Smith for a two-ball duck with one that ripped out his off-stump.
With Surrey still 199 runs in arrears, the likelihood is that Yorkshire will need just five more wickets on day four to secure their second win in six Rothesay County Championship matches this season.
Revis said: “Every one of our seamers who bowled put it in the right areas for long enough, and thankfully we got our rewards and caught very well as well.
“From an all-round aspect, we’re very, very pleased with that.
“Surrey are a very good side. They’ve been at the right end of the table for a long time now. So to put them under that pressure throughout a sustained period is very good and gives the lads a lot of confidence.”
And on Brook’s performance in the second innings, Revis said: “Brooky was warming up through the whole innings and finally got the ball. At Edgbaston last week, he did a really good job with the older ball. He got his wish with a slightly newer one today and really took his chance.”
And of the Smith dismissal, you can bet your bottom dollar the wicketkeeper-batter will not have heard the last of that one from Brook.
Revis laughed: “I was at mid-off (for the Smith dismissal), and as soon as it beat him the next thing you know Brooky is halfway to the stands. It was certainly a nice ball and one I think he’ll keep in his memory bank.”
Asked what Brook was like in the dressing room after play, he added: “I think he went straight into the ice bath to get ready for tomorrow!
“He’s obviously very chuffed with that.
“I think he’s hungry for more because he’s sniffing his first five-for.
“I don’t think he’ll be resting there.”
