Yorkshire recovered from 57-3 chasing 279, with Whiteman sharing century partnerships for the fourth and fifth wickets with James Wharton (75) and George Hill (63 not out).
The Doncaster-born Australian left-hander was the rock which the innings was built around and helped secure a fifth win in seven Group B games.
A crowd of just over 4,500 cheered to the rafters as Whiteman and Hill really attacked in the final 10 overs and then again when Fin Bean hitting the winning runs in the final over.
“The lads were mentioning when Hilly was hitting the boundaries at the end, it sort of felt like a goal getting scored in football. It was amazing,” said Whiteman.
“I think these wins are always the sweetest, when they’re gritty and the game’s on the line and blokes have to step up.
“Certainly any win’s great, but these feel really special.
“Hopefully we can just keep building on it, go down to Essex (Tuesday) and keep going the way we’re going.”
After scoring an early-season Championship century against Sussex at Headingley, Whiteman fell narrowly short of another. But this 94 off 98 balls was just as good.
“It was good fun,” he added.
“It’s obviously stressful when you’re chasing and we were sort of under the pump the whole chase. I would have loved to finish it off, but it was really nice to take it deep.
“Whenever we’ve lost, we’ve lacked a batter taking the innings deep. So it was nice to do that, and credit to James Wharton and George Hill.”
Yorkshire, with one group game remaining, have gone top of the group, though that may change come the end of the day dependent on the result of the ongoing floodlit match between Durham and Middlesex at Banks Homes Riverside.
Those two teams also have a game in hand, which will be played on Sunday.
