“If you look at it – 220, nearly 230 all out – you’d probably look to bowl them out for a bit less on that. But I think we’ve been a bit unlucky in parts.”
Those were the thoughts of three-wicket all-rounder Jordan Thompson after day one against Nottinghamshire at Headingley.
Rothesay County Championship leaders Notts, inserted got themselves up to 228 in bowler-friendly conditions before reducing Yorkshire to 10-2 in reply.
Thompson’s three-for was supplemented by two wickets for Jack White and 5-40 for George Hill.
“Hilly’s gone back-to-back with three five-fors in a row – and deservedly so. He’s bowled unbelievably well all season,” said Thompson. “Whitey up that hill was very good as well, and Coady’s sat in there just wondering how he’s not taken any wickets.
“Somebody just mentioned in the dressing room there, I think it was 109 plays and misses today, which can obviously happen. But we toiled and worked hard.”
Despite rueing their luck, Thompson, who finished with 3-77 from 21 overs, believes there were times today in which Yorkshire could have been better with the ball.
He said: “We’ve spoken about it already this season, just losing it a little bit in moments.
I think we did that again today – but not as much as we have done previously.
“We dragged it back well after lunch and again after tea, taking some wickets. But it was just either side of tea with (Joe) Clarke and (Lyndon) James together.
“Lads have bowled well up top without reward, and it’s mine and Hilly’s job to come on and obviously take wickets but also make sure we don’t leak.
“I felt, me specifically, I kind of leaked at times.
“I took wickets at important times as well, so it’s a bit of a trade-off.”
Yorkshire lost openers Adam Lyth and Fin Bean to Pakistan Test seamer Mohammad Abbas before close.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Thompson added: “It’s going to be tough with their bowlers, they get tight to the crease and look to bowl stump-to-stump.
“They’re obviously dangerous, but you’re going to get time to score, and you’ve got to grind them down and let them get tired. We’re confident.”
