Jordan Thompson believes taking the positive approach with the bat will be Yorkshire’s best route to victory during day three against Warwickshire at Emerald Headingley.

Fifteen more wickets fell on day two of this must win penultimate round Championship match, following 18 on day one. Yorkshire reached 50-3 at close chasing 224, needing 174 more.

Thompson claimed 5-52 in Warwickshire’s second innings, a season’s best.

The game remains nicely poised, even if the dismissal of Dawid Malan for 12 to the day’s last ball – a super catch at slip from Tim Bresnan – has swung the game in Warwickshire’s favour.

“It could be a significant moment,” admitted Thompson, of Malan’s dismissal to Liam Norwell.

“Mala’s just come back from the Test team, and there are reasons he’s back in – he’s a very good player.

“Losing him was frustrating, but we come back tomorrow and try to knock it off. We’ve still got the talent to get 170 runs and win this game.

“There’s a lot of time left in the game, but the people who’ve come out and scored runs have been positive. That’s how a lot of players have had success instead of being a sitting duck and waiting for a ball with your name on it.

“We have to go out with a positive mindset. We need to win this game to stay in the title race.”

Bresnan had a significant influence on the day. All three Yorkshire second-innings wickets were caught by him at first slip after hitting a lower order 36 to boost his new county’s second innings.

“We know what Brez (Tim Bresnan) can do,” said Thompson. “He’s done it year in, year out for us.

“Ideally we’d have got him out early doors and we’d be chasing 160 or 170. But he hung around and got them to a challenging score and then took those catches late on.”

Thompson claimed a first five-for of the season and has 43 Championship wickets in 2021 – Yorkshire’s best haul.

“I didn’t think that five-for was ever going to come,” he smiled.

“I had a little joke with Harry Brook out there, who said, ‘You never get five-fors’. I’ve got a habit of picking threes and fours and not getting the fifth.

“After the way I bowled in the first innings (no wickets), it was nice to get five.

“I feel like I’ve bowled well with the red ball all year and have picked up wickets by being patient and using my skills. I’m proud of it.”
