John Sadler hailed “an absolutely incredible effort” from Fin Bean after Yorkshire’s locum wicketkeeper followed four full sessions behind the stumps against Sussex with a superb unbeaten 102.

Opener Bean posted his seventh century in the Rothesay County Championship by underpinning the White Rose’s first-innings 192-1 as they replied to Sussex’s 502 all out.

At the end of the second day, Yorkshire still trail by 310. But they look set for a strong reply.

Bean has shared an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 175 with Sam Whiteman, who contributed 73 not out.

Yorkshire’s assistant coach also praised Whiteman.

Sadler said: “Beany and Sam played beautifully, didn’t they.

“When the opposition goes and gets 500, you’re always going out under pressure. We lost an early wicket as well. So for those two to put on 170, it was brilliant.

“Sam’s obviously an experienced player, but coming and joining a new club you always want to get a score on the board. He’s looked well in two or three innings so far but not gone on and got a big one. Hopefully he can do that tomorrow.

“And Beany, magnificent.

“The way he’s taken to keeping wicket this game and opening the batting, it’s an absolutely incredible effort. He’s not been off the field for a single delivery yet.

“We’re in a good position overnight. But we also know that we’re still 300 behind and there’s a lot of work to be done.

“There’s still a lot of cricket left, six sessions.

“We have to come back and bat well for at least two more sessions tomorrow.

“We’ve still got some world-class players to come in, which is exciting.

“If things go well and we play well, then we can see where we’re at at tea.

“At the minute, we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves.”
