Scorecard

Wainman and Shaw started day two with a tight opening spell. After 9 overs there was a double bowling change and this paid immediate dividends when Matthew Waite bowled Kettleborough for 23, score 34-1.

Harvey Hosein and Chesney Hughes added 21 in 58 balls for the second wicket when the former was caught at second slip by Jordan Thompson from the bowling of the returning James Wainman, Hughes at this point was 1 from 31 balls.

Skipper, Karl Carver removed Brodrick, courtesy of an excellent catch at slip by Thompson and lunch was taken with Derbyshire 121-3 from 34 overs.

The afternoon session saw us “wicketless” as Wood reached 50 from 105 balls (6×4;1 six) and Hughes increased his strike rate to reach 50 from 86 balls (9 fours) and then went to his century from a further 56 balls with 7 more fours. At tea Derbyshire were 274-3 with 31 overs remaining in the day – seven bowlers had been used.

George Hill was introduced after tea, as our eigth bowler but it was from the other end that, shortly after taking the new ball, Josh Shaw dismissed Wood for 76 from 148 balls with 9 fours and a maximum – with Hughes he had added 235 for the 4th wicket from 321 balls.

Only 5 more overs were bowled before Derbyshire declared on 352-4, a deficit of 69. This left us with 14 overs to face. Unfortunately Alex Lees was caught at third slip second ball bringing Saf Imtiaz to the crease – he played some delightful strokes but lost partner Ben Birkhead who had to retire hurt after being struck on the arm.

Matthew Waite came to the crease but was unable to repeat his first innings heroics when he “chopped on” for 9 from 9 balls. Imtiaz had made 40 from 44 balls when he was well taken at short leg and at the close we were 66-3, unsure of Birkheads situation and leading by 135.
