The Northern Diamonds are delighted to announce the signing of seam bowler Sophia Turner.

Turner, 20, who impressed in her two-match loan spell with the Diamonds at the end of last season, has signed a pay-to-play player contract through until the end of the 2024 summer.

A skilful right-armer, Turner has signed for the Diamonds from cross-Pennine rivals Thunder, for whom she played 11 times in both the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

Having debuted for them in the 2020 RHF Trophy, Turner – a product of Read Cricket Club – then made her CE Cup debut against the Diamonds at Headingley in 2021, returning a remarkable 1-4 from four overs in an away victory.

New ball exponent Turner’s two appearances whilst on loan with the Diamonds came in September in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

She claimed an impressive 1-31 from seven overs on debut in a win over Western Storm at Taunton before striking once more in the season-ending defeat against Sunrisers at Durham.

Northern Diamonds’ Sophia Turner (c) celebrates taking the wicket of Sunrisers’ Grace Scrivens, at the Seat Unique Riverside, Chester-le-Street.

Turner, a product of Lancashire’s age-group system, was part of her home county’s senior team which won the County T20 Cup in 2022.

Dani Hazell, Head Coach for the Northern Diamonds, said: “We’re really pleased to have secured Sophia for the season and I’m looking forward to her getting involved.

“She is a brilliant addition to the team and impressed during her loan spell with the team.

“We are so pleased that Sophia is staying with us, and we have a good mix of youth and experience in the squad as we look ahead to next season.

“She is the kind of player and person who will continue to add so much to our dressing room.”
