Jess Jonassen continued her brilliant debut season for Yorkshire as she scored her third century in this season’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup – but her heroics were ultimately in vain as Warwickshire triumphed at a sunny but chilly Scarborough.
The defeat, by three wickets as the Bears chased 239, felt like another case of what might have been for Yorkshire after Wednesday’s disappointing loss to Hampshire.
But Jonassen’s performance, which also saw the Australian add three wickets with her left-arm spin to a stunning 110 off 102 balls, was a real silver-lining to a fifth defeat in eight games, added to two wins and a tie.
Yorkshire’s innings – 238 all out in the 50th over – was dominated by two weighty batting partnerships, and it was the Queenslander who was the common thread putting on 89 for the second wicket with Georgie Boyce and 79 for the fifth wicket with Ines Blackwell.
The importance of Jonassen’s knock – she hit 15 fours – was emphasised after Yorkshire lost Lauren Winfield-Hill early for six to a fine delivery from Mary Taylor, leaving the 33-year-old to rebuild the innings with Boyce.
This was achieved in some style, and Yorkshire did not lose their second wicket until the 17th over – by which time the score was 95 and the hosts were up and running despite Boyce departing for 37 after slapping one straight to cover.
Hannah Baker’s leg-breaks were proving effective, and she quickly accounted for Sterre Kalis, bowled with a beauty for three, before Ami Campbell departed for one, caught at deep point off Georgia Davis.
That left Yorkshire wobbling at 108-4, but Blackwell and Jonassen’s partnership proved crucial as they edged the home side towards respectability.

Left-handed Jonassen, in particular, showed real class as she dominated the bowling, while Blackwell’s 33 was further proof that this teenager is developing rapidly.
Baker claimed her third victim when Blackwell was stumped off a wide, with Maddie Ward bowled by Phoebe Brett soon after for one and Jonassen in danger of running out of partners.
She brought her century up off 95 balls in the 42nd over but could only add 10 more runs as she looked to accelerate and was caught by Meg Austin off Davis.
Beth Langston (18) and Rachel Slater (14) were able to add some valuable lower order runs before falling to Taylor and Davis respectively.
Jess Woolston was then bowled first ball by Brett to wrap up Yorkshire’s innings with four balls remaining.
Warwickshire’s reply got off to a dreadful start when Georgia Redmayne was run out off the first ball of the innings after smart work from Jonassen following a mis-field.
It really was a case of ‘yes, no, sorry’ and even ‘sorry again’.
But any hope of early wickets for the hosts was quickly extinguished as Amu Surenkumar and Austin made serene progress until the latter was trapped in front by Claudie Cooper for 30 after a second wicket partnership of 72.

Two became three when Surenkumar was stumped for 45 off Cooper’s off-spin before a second of three Winfield-Hill stumpings – this off Jonassen – accounted for Pavely for three.
Suddenly the visitors were 85-4, and Yorkshire sensed an opportunity as Warwickshire looked to rebuild.
Abbey Freeborn and Brewer obliged and calmed the nerves as the target fell below 100 runs and Yorkshire strived for wickets.
Brewer brought up her half-century in the 36th over, but yet another stumping from Winfield-Hill saw her depart for 56 and the partnership broken at 93 runs as Jonassen claimed a second wicket.
Freeborn fell soon after, bowled for 36 by Jonassen for her third wicket – 195-6.
But it felt like the damage had been done, and Warwickshire eased to victory with 16 balls left despite the late run out of Natasha Wraith.
This game marked the halfway mark in a competition which now breaks for the start of the Vitality Blast on Friday. Yorkshire face The Blaze at Trent Bridge in the afternoon part of a daily double header with Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire men.
