A damaging batting collapse following a strong start cost battling Yorkshire the chance to beat Surrey in today’s fascinating Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash at Ampleforth College which ended with the visitors winning by two wickets.
Lauren Winfield-Hill looked in good order for 48, and en-route shared 52 inside seven overs for the first wicket with Alice Clarke after the White Rose had been asked to bat.
Unfortunately, though, both fell in quick succession, while two run outs followed and spin had success as Yorkshire were bowled out for 171 in 33 overs. South African all-rounder Sune Luus claimed 3-33 from nine overs of leg-spin, while Sarah Glenn with 32 was the only other home batter to make it to or beyond 25.
Spin played a prominent role in deciding this game, with England left-armer Tilly Corteen-Coleman striking twice as Surrey maintained their hopes of reaching the top three places in the table for knockout cricket. But they were helped along by two run outs.
Yorkshire fought hard with the ball, with seam duo Jess Woolston and Hannah Rainey sharing five wickets. Rainey finished with an excellent 3-41 from nine overs But captain Kira Chathli, who saw her side fall to 148-8, steered her side over the line with an unbeaten 66 off 75 balls.
Having been asked to bat, Yorkshire raced out of the blocks as captain Winfield-Hill dominated the half-century opening stand, looking particularly good on the drive.

But the fact Clarke and her fell in quick succession, Winfield-Hill stumped advancing down the pitch at Corteen-Coleman’s second ball – 83-4 in the 15th over – was a hammer blow to the hosts.
Amelia Oliver and Ami Campbell, the latter for 21, were both run out trying to complete quick singles to mid-wicket and cover. Oliver was the striker in her case, Campbell starting at the non-striker’s end in hers.
Sterre Kalis had holed out to long-on against Luus before Monaghan accounted for Erin Thomas lbw and Beth Langston bowled as the score fell to 129-7 in the 25th over.
Glenn played nicely for her 32, but it only served to add some respectability to the scorecard instead of boosting an already strong total which had looked a possibility early on.
Yorkshire desperately needed one of their top order to post a big score on a pitch which suited spin but with a fast outfield.
With that in mind, the absence of Jess Jonassen to a knee injury was a major blow to Yorkshire, both with the bat and the ball.

Woolston’s seam removed opener Sophia Dunkley well caught at mid-off by a diving Kalis in the second over of the Surrey chase, 7-1.
And when Capsey on 26 whipped to Campbell at mid-wicket, Woolston had a second and Surrey were 43-2 in the 12th.
While’s Yorkshire’s effort with the bat would have disappointed them, they did fight hard and impressively with the ball.
Luus for 19 was next to go with the score on 61 in the 17th over, bowled by Glenn’s leg-spin.
All of a sudden, the hosts had a glimmer of hope.
But Davidson-Richards and Chathli calmed things down for their side with a 45-run stand.

Still, it wasn’t job done for the visitors as Yorkshire refused to let this game drift and Surrey were put under significant pressure, falling to 148-8 after 36 overs
Claudie Cooper had Davidson-Richards caught and bowled for 28 before Beth Langston also struck to leave Surrey at 148 for eight after 36. Sandwiched in between, Rainey got Jemima Spence caught behind and Monaghan and Aylish Cranstone caught at backward point, the latter brilliantly by Clarke.
Amidst the carnage, Chathli reached her fifty off 59 balls and just about saw her side over the line.
She hit back-to-back boundaries off Cooper to win it.
Yorkshire have now lost eight of 12 games in the One-Day Cup, while Surrey have won six of 12.
