SCORECARD

Yorkshire lost their last six wickets for the addition of only 15 runs before lunch on day two at Edgbaston before half-centuries for Rob Yates and Dan Mousley helped Warwickshire turn things around in the ongoing Rothesay County Championship fixture.

The White Rose started the day with the initiative at 110-4 in their first-innings reply to 147 all out, and with Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow at the crease.

However, both fell for 40 and 25 respectively – Brook’s the joint top-score in the innings alongside James Wharton – and Yorkshire ended up being bowled out for 152 half an hour before lunch. Oliver Hannon-Dalby stood out with 4-38 against his former – and home – county.

From there, left-handers Yates and Mousley – 81 and 70 respectively – underpinned a strong reply as the Bears reached close at 267-3 from 77 overs, a lead of 262.

The White Rose just couldn’t make the most of helpful bowling conditions, something they will have to do tomorrow morning in order to get themselves back into this contest.

Yorkshire actually started the day in positive fashion, scoring 27 runs in the first five overs of the day, including Bairstow whipping Bamber for six over mid-wicket.

Unfortunately, then things turned, with wickets falling quickly as the Bears turned a game which was heading the White Rose’s way into an even one.

Brook had added 11 to his overnight score before being bowled on the drive by Bamber – 137-5 in the 31st over.

In the next, Bairstow attempted to leave alone one angled into him from Hannon-Dalby and lost his off-stump on 25.

From there, no other Yorkshire batter made it into double figures as Yates took his aforementioned trio of catches at second slip, including a stunner to wrap up the innings.

He helped Hannon-Dalby remove Dom Bess and Ed Barnard get rid of Ben Cliff. Sandwiched in between, Logan van Beek miscued a drive at Jordan Thompson to cover.

The Cliff wicket was Warwickshire captain Barnard’s 350th in first-class wicket, while all-rounder Thompson claimed his 200th first-class wicket – the vast majority of which have come in a Yorkshire shirt – when George Hill edged to Yates, and he took a one-handed beauty going to his right.

Warwickshire then reached lunch at 7-0 in their second innings, a lead of two.

And they built on that strongly during the afternoon, with left-handed Yates leading the way.

Unfortunately, Yorkshire did not find the consistency and penetration which they had done in the first innings to bowl the hosts out for 147, and they actually reached that same number second time around for the loss of only one wicket.

Yates and opening partner Alex Davies, who shared 95 inside 25 overs, took a liking to the seam of Dutch overseas van Beek in particular, taking 30 off his first two overs from the Birmingham End of this ground before he was withdrawn.

Yates reached his fifty off 67 balls. The fact that it included 10 fours indicates there were just too many boundary balls on offer.

The breakthrough came courtesy of Matthew Revis, who induced a leading edge to cover from Davies on 38 approximately an hour before tea.

Warwickshire reached tea on 142-1 from 35, with Yates unbeaten on 80.

Thankfully, he only added one more to that tally before feeling for one outside off-stump and edging the excellent Jack White (1-14 from 11 overs) to Harry Brook at first slip – 147-2 in the 38th over.

Brook also bowled 11 overs of medium-paced seam for 26 either side of tea as the visitors did slow the scoring rate. But it was wickets they needed as well.

And left-handed Mousley helped strengthen Warwickshire’s position with a determined 96-ball fifty.

By the time he got there, his side were 200-2 midway through the evening with a lead of 195.

He was in partnership with Sam Hain, and they added 82 before Mousley pulled van Beek down to long-leg with the score on 229 in the 62nd over, the home lead at 224.

Hain then advanced to 43 not out overnight and will begin tomorrow alongside Australian Beau Webster, who has 18.

Yorkshire will get use of the new ball three overs into tomorrow’s third day. Realistically, it has to work for them.
