SCORECARD

Jack White impressed with 4-49 in 16 overs as Yorkshire enjoyed a superb start to their Rothesay County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston, bowling the hosts out for 149 before tea on day one.

Yorkshire’s bid for back-to-back Division One wins was given an early leg-up by the metronomic new-ball seamer, who claimed his third four-wicket haul in the last three matches.

Sam Hain top-scored for the Bears with 57 off 97 balls, with number 10 Ethan Bamber’s 28 the only other home score above 10 on a pitch which offered appreciable seam movement coupled with obvious swing on offer.

The White Rose then advanced their reply to 110-4 from 25 overs at close, with James Wharton (40) and Harry Brook (29 not out) sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 63. That partnership was the day’s highest. Bad light then ended play 16 overs early, with the deficit only 37.

Earlier, Ben Cliff, George Hill and Logan van Beek all supplemented White’s good work with two wickets apiece.

While striking early in the Yorkshire reply, leaving the score at 38-3, the Bears’ bowlers failed to sustain the pressure which the visitors had created during the first two sessions.

Yorkshire made two changes from their win over Somerset at Taunton last time out; Cliff and Brook for rested duo Jhye Richardson and Joe Root.

And success came quickly after Jonny Bairstow elected to bowl on a green-tinged pitch, albeit with a short boundary towards the Eric Hollies Stand side of the ground.

White struck five balls into the contest, getting Alex Davies caught at second slip by Adam Lyth as he pushed forwards at a good length delivery, leaving Warwickshire at 7-1. Davies had already cut a boundary in front of square.

White took the new ball alongside Cliff, whose account was opened when Rob Yates edged a ball angled across him behind to Jonny Bairstow in the fourth over – 11-2. Cliff had previously been swinging them back into the left-hander.

Next to go was a driving Dan Mousley, the left-hander edging White to Brook at first slip with 33 on the board in the ninth over.

Mousley was the first of three Bears to fall on the drive.

Australian Test all-rounder Beau Webster was next, bowled through the gate by Hill, before captain Ed Barnard edged behind an expansive drive at Logan van Beek five overs later, leaving the score at 71-5 in the 21st.

At this stage, it was as if Hain was batting on a different pitch. Yes, he was troubled by some incisive White Rose bowling, but he handled the threat well to see his side through to lunch at 80-5, of which he had scored 47.

Sam Hain

Thankfully, despite reaching his fifty off 79 balls, Hain didn’t last too much longer.

He was the first wicket of the afternoon, caught at first slip by Brook off White thanks to extra bounce, as the Bears’ fell to 94-6 in the 35th over.

Zen Malik was one of only two other Warwickshire batters to reach double figures – him with 10 – but he was next to go when caught at third slip by Fin Bean pushing forwards at Cliff.

Michael Booth was squared up by George Hill and edged behind – 109-8 in the 43rd over – before Jordan Thompson was trapped lbw by a full van Beek delivery for eight shortly afterwards.

Warwickshire only advanced at a snail’s pace, despite Hain’s class.

However, Bamber did club a couple of late leg-side sixes off van Beek to at least push his side up towards 150 before being trapped lbw by White to wrap up the innings to signal an early tea.

Bamber was immediately into the action after tea on this ‘a ball with your name on it’ kind of pitch.

Jack White

He opened the bowling and struck early to get Bean lbw after Hannon-Dalby had removed Lyth caught behind in the previous over. At that stage, Yorkshire were 15-2 in the fifth over.

Matthew Revis followed lbw to Hannon-Dalby with the score on 38 in the 12th over.

Brook and Wharton then both unfurled eye-catching cover drives for four off Bamber and Hannon-Dalby respectively as Yorkshire moved to 50-3 in the 14th over.

Brook uppercut the wayward pace of Booth for six over third, and he and Wharton took the visitors up to the 100-mark in confident fashion.

Unfortunately, Wharton fell when he edged Thompson’s seam to second slip, leaving Yorkshire at 101-4 in the 24th over.

And there was only seven more balls bowled before the light intervened just before 5.45pm.
