SCORECARD

Warwickshire took the five wickets they needed for victory before lunch on day four at Edgbaston as Yorkshire were consigned to their second Rothesay County Championship defeat of the summer, this by 377 runs.

Set an almost impossible 549-target to win this game at tea yesterday, Yorkshire reached close at 98-5 with all-rounders Matthew Revis and George Hill at the crease.

The White Rose’s hopes of an escape-act were raised by some heavy morning rain, but it cleared up quickly and only delayed the start until 11.15am.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby removed Revis for 41 inside the day’s opening half an hour before they were bowled out for 171 five minutes before the scheduled lunch break.

Yorkshire, who picked up three points, will be mightily frustrated at this defeat, which goes alongside the loss against Hampshire at Headingley last month.

They have also drawn two and won one of their opening five Division One matches in 2026.

They had this game in their grasp at the end of day one; 110-4 in their first-innings reply to Warwickshire’s 147 all out. Unfortunately from there, the Bears dominated to seal their second win in five games.

Yorkshire were well below standard with bat and ball as they were bowled out for 152 before the hosts racked up 553-6 declared on an easing batting pitch but still one with enough there for the bowlers.

It will be doubly galling that this performance came on the back of last week’s superb victory over Somerset at Taunton.

Hannon-Dalby made the breakthrough when he had Revis caught at second slip pushing forwards in the day’s sixth over, the 38th, leaving Yorkshire at 112-6.

George Hill, on 27, followed, caught at second slip off Hannon-Dalby new-ball partner, Ethan Bamber, whose back-of-a-length ball nipped away and squared the batter up – 116-7 in the 41st over.

Hannon-Dalby struck again when Logan van Beek pushed forwards and edged to second slip, where Rob Yates took his sixth catch of the match.

And when the same bowler yorked Ben Cliff, uprooting his leg-stump in the process, Yorkshire were 149-9 after 50 overs.

Dom Bess then pulled Beau Webster’s seam for two sixes in the next few overs and finished with an unbeaten 39.

Ex-Yorkshire all-rounder Jordan Thompson’s first ball of the day then accounted for Jack White caught behind to wrap up the home win.

Yorkshire will aim to bounce back at Headingley from Friday when Surrey are the visitors. Joe Root and Harry Brook will both in the home side.
