An impressive all-round display from Ami Campbell was not enough for Yorkshire as they slipped to a Metro Bank One-Day Cup defeat by eight runs against Essex Eagles at Chelmsford in their penultimate game of the summer.
Left-handed opener and home captain Grace Scrivens’ 109-ball 87 with 10 fours was the feature of Essex’s 241 all out, which saw the White Rose fight back late on.
They took six wickets in the final 10 overs, including three for the off-spin of Campbell, who was bowling in a match for the first time in more than 10 years.
Sarah Glenn struck twice at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, while Jess Jonassen was the pick of the bowlers with 3-30 from 10 overs.
Unfortunately, though the total still proved unassailable, despite 64 off 49 balls from Campbell and 52 off 88 from Sterre Kalis. Yorkshire were bowled out for 233 off the penultimate ball of a match which ended with the visitors needing 15 off the last over.
England’s Jodi Grewcock was superb for Essex with 37 and 3-38 from 10 overs of leg-spin. But Essex remain bottom of the table, a place below Yorkshire, who were beaten for the 11th time in 15 games.
A significant positive for Yorkshire was the surprise inclusion of captain Lauren Winfield-Hill in the side following her throat injury suffered whilst wicketkeeping at Hampshire on Sunday. She required hospital treatment, and the expectation was that she wouldn’t be fit to play here.

Fledgling seamer Lucy Randle-Bissell struck twice early on for Yorkshire – her first two senior wickets. She had Lissy Macleod caught behind cutting in the second over before Scrivens and Grewcock advanced Essex’s cause to the tune of a 60-run stand inside nine overs from 10-1.
Yorkshire erred in line as left-handers Scrivens and Grewcock advanced at a good pace.
Grewcock had made her way to 37 by the time she pulled a Jonassen short ball to mid-wicket before Randle-Bissell had Sophia Smale (30) caught at backward point uppercutting, leaving Essex at 132-3 after 25 overs.
Jonassen had Ella Claridge caught and bowled off a leading edge – 168-4 – but with Scrivens at the crease it seemed like Essex would assert themselves heading into the latter stages of the innings.
They reached the 40-over mark at 196-4, only to stumble in the final 10 to Jonassen, Glenn and the unlikely bowling hero Campbell.
The last time Campbell bowled in a match was May 2016, so pre the Kia Super League or any of the progression through to professional cricket.
After Jo Gardner offered a return catch to Glenn, Campbell had key batter Scrivens caught on the drive before getting Amelie Bishop caught at deep mid-wicket and Abtaha Maqsood caught and bowled to wrap up the innings in the final over.

Glenn had Mollie Adams caught behind, while Jonassen trapped Bryony Gillgrass lbw in the latter stages.
Yorkshire’s chances of reeling in their target were hurt by the early losses of Winfield-Hill and Jonassen as the score slipped to 19-2 in the fourth over.
Four balls in, Winfield-Hill was caught and bowled off a leading edge by seamer Esmae MacGregor before Jonassen pulled Bishop out to deep mid-wicket, where Gillgrass took an impressive low catch diving forwards.
Yorkshire rebuilt through Clarke and Kalis, taking the score to 46-2 after eight overs. Kalis cut two boundaries off the spin of Gillgrass to move into the teens.
Amidst a 10-ball sixth over, Bishop bowled four successive wides to Clarke. But Clarke fell when she cut Maqsood’s leg-spin to backward point with the score on 58 in the 11th over.
Yorkshire reached 102-4 after 25 overs, with Kalis 37 not out and with Campbell for company.
They advanced the White Rose cause encouragingly, and by the time Kalis reached her fifty in 84 balls, Yorkshire were 138-4 in the 33rd over.

This was Kalis’s fifth fifty in 15 matches in this competition, while Campbell reached her first off 42 balls not long afterwards.
Glenn fell to Grewcock – 171-6 in the 37th over – before Campbell was stumped attacking Smale’s left-arm spin a couple of overs later.
Rebecca Duckworth and Beth Langston then both got themselves set and were in the teens when taking the target down to 27 off the last four overs at 215-7.
But MacGregor bowled a brilliant 48th over, conceding only one runs and getting Duckworth stumped for 20 – 221-8 – to give the hosts the advantage.
Grewcock strengthened that view by getting Hannah Rainey in the penultimate, with 15 needed off the last. Against Gillgrass, Langston and Randle-Bissell were unable to get their side home.
Randle-Bissell was bowled to finish things.
