Opening batter Adam Lyth succinctly summed up day two at Hove today, saying: “It wasn’t our best performance with the bat, but I think our bowlers there hit good lines and lengths and caused them problems.”

As Yorkshire’s penultimate round Rothesay County Championship clash started a day late following weather, they were bowled out for 194 before restricting Sussex to 84-4 in reply.

Lyth was the day’s top performer with the bat across either side, posting 47.

“Getting them four down – another 25 minutes to half-an-hour, they could have been five or six down,” he continued. “Hopefully it’s overcast tomorrow, they can put the ball in the right area and make some more inroads.

“On the whole I think it’s a pretty decent wicket. There’s just enough in there.

“The slowness of the wicket can sometimes draw you in as batters. But, no excuses, we’ve not batted well enough at all.

“If we have a very good strong hour in the morning and take three or four wickets, that would be fantastic. As the game has showed, wickets have come in clusters and it’s not easy to start.”

Lyth edged left-arm seamer Sean Hunt behind just before lunch today as Yorkshire, who elected to bat, fell to 87-2 in the 30th over.

“I thought it was full enough to drive, but I’ve seen on the replay it wasn’t quite full enough,” he added.

“I’ve prided myself this year on not giving my wicket away, and it’s only the third or fourth time that I have. I’m pleased about that but not about the timing of it today, just before lunch.

“It was a nice 47, but I wanted to carry on.”
