Will Luxton scored a brilliant List A career best 126 – his second successive Metro Bank One-Day Cup century – as Yorkshire saw off the defending champions at York, and he said. “There’s nothing better than winning games.”
Luxton helped Yorkshire cruise a chase of 231, winning by six wickets with 9.2 overs to spare.
After defeat in their Group B opener against Hampshire at Scarborough last Tuesday, the picture has changed significantly since, and for the better. They have won three games in a row and are on course for the knockouts.
Luxton has been to the fore.
In the last four days, he has posted scores of 117 in victory over Sussex at Hove and today’s 126.
He’s the leading run-scorer in the competition with 331.
The in-form opener said: “We’ve put a real emphasis on this comp, we want to try and win it. Games like this we should be winning, and it’s nice to get it over the line.”
George Hill claimed three wickets, with Ben Coad, Jack White and Kuldeep Yadav two apiece.
Coad set the tone after Dom Bess had won the toss, claiming wickets in each of his first two overs. Both of them were maidens.
“We always know that York’s a decent wicket. Coady bowled how Coady bowls, got a few early and we did well to restrict them,” said Luxton.
“Then we got off to a decent start, and once you do that you can’t really stop it here.
“I had a bit of luck at the start, but it’s just about playing your shots and hopefully they come off.”
Luxton was watched by his dad Chris, mum Suzanne and grandma Janet.
They weren’t present for either of his two previous centuries this season, against Warwickshire at Scarborough in the Championship and Sussex at Hove in this competition.
“All the family were here,” he beamed.
“They’ll be thinking they’re a bad luck charm, but hopefully today’s showed them that they’re not.”
